Jiraiya puts the Shodai, Nidaime and Sandaime Hokage's deaths in the same category ("I wanted to die like them"). As we know, the Nidaime, Sandaime, and Yondaime Hokage all died, sacrificing themselves for the village. It's only logical that Hashirama, the Shodai Hokage, did the same:

Well, I really think Jiraiya suffered from low self-esteem. He only looked at the failures of his life, and never even considered himself to be worthy of the titles bestowed upon him (I don't remember if it was as one of the Sannin or Toad Sage).

With all due respect to your opinion sir. He was the most FEARED and STRONGEST shinobi of his time. There is utterly 0 way he could've died in battle. And the manga and databook also do not hint that. I think that is your assumption.

I didn't specify on how he sacrificed himself. He could have just burned his chakra reserves against many, many, shinobi like the Sandaime Raikage did.
