But this does not mean he will die, just that he feels himself near death, OK?

About the Native American culture thing, that may be something other cultures share, but not just when they die. For instance, if you take any manga/anime about sports, a single attempt to make a goal in soccer will last about 15 minutes because the character will "remember the day my sensei showed me how...", so a manga character is not necessarily dying when he remembers something.
