Brotherhood is waaay better.
I watched the 1st Fullmetal on adultswim a few years back, while it was interesting, the lack of action sequences eventually made me bored.

But brotherhood was a whole nother thing. Not only was it interesting, made more sense and was more in-depth, the action was awesome.

FMA: Brotherhood is the best to go, to any new FMA watchers, watch FMA: BH, THEEEEEN the original anime version if you want to.

I like them the same, and they both are really good.

FMA (2003) is basically it's own story with the same basic characters. almost like a Fan Fic. It's a lot longer (almost 3 times as long as brotherhood) and last "Episode" is a full length movie.

FMA Brotherhood (2010) sticks with the Manga, but is short but just as good as the 2003 series.. IMO

They are both good. But while, FMA wigged out the closer the series go to the end....FMA Brotherhood remained strong.

I watched both and Brotherhood as ALOT better..

The fights got alot more action, alot more character development and a way better plot, especially the final arc, that was just soo epic.. everything in Brotherhood just made alot more sense.

Ed didn't die in FMA, he was sent to another dimension, there's an FMA movie where Ed is in that other dimension and returns to his own world at the end.. pretty much a movie to close the open ending FMA left.

And yeah, Roy is ALOT more awesome in Brotherhood.

I love them both, they are my favorite anime and manga. Though I prefer brotherhood over just normal FMA. It just seems much better at most parts then the normal one.

While Brotherhood(2009) is probably the better series, I love the original(2003) more. It was the first thing about Fullmetal Alchemist I saw, even before I read the manga, and those characters just grew on me so fast. I think the biggest thing that hinders me personally from liking Brotherhood more is the fact that the Homunculi weren't created from failed attempts at human transmutation in Brotherhood. My favorite character is Envy in the original and each and every time he came onto the screen my first thought was, "He hates them." because he clearly hated Ed and Al. That was a hatred I wish they would have gone on more in the original... You don't leave something like that under the surface of a plot until the last two or three episodes. Naaawww. Of course Brotherhood is still, in my opinion, technically the better one. It's the one that follows the offical manga, anyway.
