Why Madara is a broken shell?

Itachi has stated that Madara has become a shell of his former self. I have speculated about this and wondered if it was because Shodaime beat him (and he simply never recovered), or is it another reason. I believe that when Madara first summoned the 9-tails, he transferred an insane amount of his chakra into the 9-tails to both create/summon and also control. Once he was defeated and the 9-tails was sent dormant (only speculation right now) Madara lost all of the chakra he put into it, which explains why he has not been able to recover. In the first few mangas after the time-skip when Naruto first saw Sasuke again, 9-tails and Sasuke had a conversation in which the Kyuubi stated something along the lines of, "Do not kill Naruto, you will regret it." I believe this is because if the Kyuubi is destroyed, the chakra will be sent back into Madara, and he would be able to dominate the Narutoverse. I am pretty tired right now and did not feel like posting links so maybe i will do that tomorrow....maybe....but probably not.

Madara is still a mystery to me. Is he planning to kill every single person in the world or has he another goal?

Madaras goals..........Hmmmmm......He want to create Ultimate Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan...He has his own EMS + Now he wants sasuke to take Itachis MS, so Sasuke will have EMS. Then madara will kill sasuke and will take Sasuke's EMS..So here u have new powerfull doujutsu created with two EMS..............

kishi isnt stupid he wouldnt just say something like that and i dont think kyuubi would bluff like hidan as scared last words.... i think he really had deep meaning within it.

how can chakra be sent back once its left the body it cant return unless you say he has a absorbtion technqiue but he didnt control the kyuubi with chakra he used his eyes are powerful and probably used genjutsu on him but madara is a shell of his former self because he simply isnt the ninja he once was thats all its a figure of speech

Yea , I understood that sentence same as you did . I guess Itachi wanted to say that hes not worth "Uchiha " name , and hes different than before , hes hiding in shadows now...
