Re: The Lord Of The Rings VS A Song of Ice and Fire
I don't really know what 'A Song of Ice and Fire' is, but LoTR is a phenomenon

Lord of The Rings is one of the best selling novels of all times.
I think you should change to: Lord of the Rings vs Harry Potter

Lord of the Rings, even if it was LotR vs HP I'd still take Lord of the Rings

LOTR is a masterpiece while a Song of Ice and Fire is good and I watch the show based off it, it has too much incest and stuff in it

Re: The Lord Of The Rings VS A Song of Ice and Fire
how bout HP VS Ice & Fire that would be kinda fair (i still like HP more) ... well at least more fair than lotr vs i&f
LoTR beats it no sweat at all if you add the silmarillion unfinished tails and all the rest than its like comparing a small almost ruined wooden cottage full of termites in the woods to versailles

Re: The Lord Of The Rings VS A Song of Ice and Fire
Too early to judge as A song of Ice and Fire isn't finished yet, it has yet more books to be published. However, Lotr pretty much did define the genre "epic fantasy novel".
I like both of em, but it's still too early to judge. (I'm going by the books.. not the screenplay, mainly because Lotr became a trilogy of films, where as ASOIAF is a tv series.)

You make it sound like nudity is a bad thing in shows.
"too much incest", its only Cersei and so far there have only been two scenes in the whole series.

Re: The Lord Of The Rings VS A Song of Ice and Fire
So far, there is no comparison. I have read both series and LotR is just on another level.
Reading the SOIAF books is very tiresome actually and I have serious problems with Martin's writing style. The storyline is advancing slowly, the characters have stopped growing since the 'Clash of Kings', there is no climax in any of the books and most importantly, he doesn't seem to have any desire to finish the series. Ever!

I've only seen the LOTR movies and none of A Song of Fire and Ice, so I have to go with LOTR

Re: The Lord Of The Rings VS A Song of Ice and Fire
i love lord of the ring but honestly i better go with song of ice and fire in this one.
lord of the ring still has the cliche that the hero saved the day even if he is really outnumber or the plot will saves their asses.
in song of ice and fire, it doest give a danm about if you are a hero wanna be.
or if you wanna be the ultimate bad guy.
the book is about many people, there are not jut evil and good, and the good guy just because they are the good guy will screw the bad guys..
Lets call that song of ice and fire is more realistic in that aspect.

Re: The Lord Of The Rings VS A Song of Ice and Fire
LoTR defined the genre, it was the mother of all fantasy series, you have a genre name tolkienese after it [Wikipedia it]
yes it was cliche in the ending but even that had a twist to it which if you know the backstory makes a lot bigger impact.
yes song of ice and fire is awesome in terms of moral ambiguity and all but i still prefer LotR, narrowly.
try comparing it to Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. that would be a better match up

wheels of time is another classic epic series but it gets kinda boring from book 6 and The POV characters storys like egwene nynaeve and elayne are pretty boring...

+1.
It gets extremely repetitive almost always. Reading the books is a pain in the butt, but the storyline is so strong that makes you wanna continue.

Re: The Lord Of The Rings VS A Song of Ice and Fire
based off books, not tv/movie renditions , id go with a song of ice and fire, i was really captivated with the story line and the vast intricacies of the different characters, seeing how they were all personally driven by different subjective reasons, and how the book really removes the sense of right and wrong, and what is and isnt moral, and just shows you people stall striving for the same thing essentially, to win the game of thrones, and trying to survive the backlash of their own decisions along with supressing the opposing ambitions of others
and honestly westeros/the wall/the grass lands were more fun for me to imagine than middle earth :D

Re: The Lord Of The Rings VS A Song of Ice and Fire
well not every one have read, song of ice and fire but since lord of the ring is a movie, most people watched it.
But song of ice and fire, the sense of no right and wrong makes it more brilliant and unpredictiable, also it was the best character development you can find in any serie.
