Its between Genryusai and Shunsui. Not sure why everyones saying Aizen because Ichigo owned him. Genryusai is stronger than Aizen (that's why aizen made wonderweiss, he knew he couldn't beat Genryusai) and Shunsui beat the numero 1 espada with only his shikai.

Not to mention there's Buckbeard who has apparently fought Yamamoto before and survived. Not only does this hint that he is extremely strong but that he's extremely old as well.

If anything, it should be between Yamamoto and Buckbeard with Aizen coming in at second.

he was only able to do this because they were incredibly tired they had all just fought (and beaten) the espada were as he was fresh, also shunsui and shinji were not using their bankai's. if it had been a fair fight i reckon shunsui, shinji and hitsugaya would have won

If you include Ichigo's FGT, then there's no reason not to include Aizen with hsi Hogyoku. Ichigo's FGT was more of a troll than the Hogyoku.

Shunsei, Unohana, Kisuke, Genryusai, Yoruichi, and Ukitate are all people whose bankai are yet to be seen and the only thing we know about any of their bankai's, is that Shunsei's must be very wide scaled and very powerful for Ukitake to stop him from using it in the fight against Aizen.

If anything the strongest probably ought to be Kenpachi, he's so damn powerful when he releases his eye patch ad doesn't even use his Shikai. It just doesn't seem fathomable that Ichigo is the strongest shinigami, he's only been a soulreaper for a few years. While Unohana and Shunsei have been around for 100+ some years, captain level at that. How could Ichigo be stronger than the captains that have been fighting and gaining experience for who knows how long? but the anime is about Ichigo.

Nah man, I don't believe it said Buckbeard lost to Yamamoto. It said Yamamoto failed to kill him. Besides, there's not many people who Yamamoto would be fighting to the death against. This in itself pumps Buckbeard above any other Captains besides Yama. There's also the fact that Buckbeard is clearly as old as Yamamoto considering they fought over 1000 years ago .

In any regard, after Yama it's likely Unohana followed by Uki and Kyo (in no particular order for the last 2). They're the top 4 without a doubt.
