Did Hashirama and Madara have mutual respect for one another?

We've all seen how much Madara admires the 1st hokage but as I've been reading theories about who created Zetsu (or Tobi for that matter) I've started to think that maybe the 1st really did admire Madara.
The 1st had no competition. If edo Madara is any indication then Hashirama must have been almost bored before Madara came along. I imagine him pleading with Madara to combine their strength for the good of the ninja world.
Maybe Tobi is a joint creation of Hashirama and his brother Tobirama (something about his name and his edo techs just begs the connection) to try and salvage Madara's power. Unfortunately that power is an empty mass of hatred and despair that just wants to collapse the whole world on itself like a black hole. Tobi could be the result of good intentions gone wrong.

I think there was mutual respect developed through multiple battles. Hashi was shown to be a very nice, for lack of a better word, guy. If Madara, evil, showed that much respect I can only imagine that Hashi felt the same.

Most likely Madara respects Hashi after death so Hashi must respect Madara's power NOT his way of doing things

I think Hashi and Madara had a mutual respect for one another and just like Madara wanted his power, so too did Hashirama want Madara's power. Or he at least hought it a shame that such power would die with Madara. So perhaps this motivated the creation of Zetsu, or Tobi, or sticking ems eyeballs in a zetsu....

Just occured to me that maybe that's what Madara meant when he said he fought Hashi that last time to get his power. We've all thought Madara stole his dna or copied his techs but maybe the plan was to tempt Hashi into transplanting those EMS eyes into a mokuton type creation. Maybe a curse of the sharingan is that you can't retransplant EMS eyes cuz then a void is created that wants everything to shut down.
Madara might've known that would trigger the moons eye plan which would be fine by him. The moons eye plan is essentially to revive the jubi and take it into oneself. Even Tobi's reasons as stated to Minato are funny:to make war to make peace... Like a black whole Tobi now wants to collapse the whole narutoverse in upon itslef with himself at the center. Sounds like a curse that could be triggered by being greedy with the eternal mangekyo sharingan

By the way Madara talks about Hashi, I think they had much more going on than just rivalry. They must have gotten together as couples and then formed the Leaf Village. The real reason Madara attacked the village was because he was mad Hashi left him for Mito.

Does anyone else find it weird how much Madara talks about Hashirama. I know he is suppose to be his rival and all, but mentioning in almost every scene is a bit over the top don't you think?


Look at these scans again. The way Madara talks about Hashi is almost intimate don't you think? "All you left was some power thats clinging to me".

The above scan also shows how much he misses him. He wishes he can revive him from the grave? Really.....



He wants to kill Tsunade just because she is his descendant? Sounds like a mad cheated on person to me.

I think they respected each other. They were rivals.If madara was alot weaker then hashi he wouldnt be worthy of being a rival and vice versa. They fought for the title of hokage.They brought at the best in each other.Like madara told the kages .When they fight landscapes drastically change!

I think Hashirama acknowledged Madara's power and thus in a way respected it. But i doubt he respected such an arrogant man.
