In an interview I read, Kishimoto stated that Konoha is the military part of the naruto world. I think it's like a military academy. If I'm not mistaken...

math helps you more than understanding the language of the mad. Ask Shikumaru, calculating odds and chances, determing the range of jutsu... it's math.

Uhh I think it is called the ninja academy so I would think it would be to learn ninja skills. Just guessing on that one. I would imagine there are other schools to teach things like reading and writing since non-ninjas need to know that stuff and they of course are not going to the ninja academy.
