Lightning is 1 of 5 main elements it can be used to shock the oponent or pierce them.It is strong against earth but weak against elements such as water and fire and is nuetral to wind.Despite being weak to water it is often used in combination with water to provide extra shock as water can be conducted by the lightning.It is used in real life as a source of energy.
