I think he is an mirror image of naruto which is shown by how they looked and acted.
But they took the opposite paths to the same goal.I think obito was unable to win over his hatred and sadness.Kishi always has his characters have a messed up psyche or twisted ideology.If it is tobi anyway.I am still leaning on the paths of madara using obito as a vessel.
