yup pretty much. naruto is rooted in mythology, itachi is orochimaru's mortal enemy in japanese mythology for instance (weasels kill snakes, susanoo killed yamata no orochi, the totsuka sword is the only counter to the sword of kusanagi etc).

anyway, the toad>slug>snake>toad dynamic is pretty simple. acid won't work on toads, while oil fuelled flames will obliterate a slug. acid will work on snakes while biting and constriction won't harm the slug. and flames and blunt/piercing damage won't kill a snake capable of shedding it's skin, while constriction and bites will kill the toad.

and even in the manga, the dynamic between the sannin was made quite clear. jiraiya never managed to beat oro, tsunade trashed orochimaru, and jiraiya confidently stated he would kill tsunade if she betrayed konoha, which was why tsunade drugged him.

imo these little hints paint a far clearer picture of what kishi intends than feats, which are purely circumstantial and can be interpreted subjectively.

There is no prep time involved in VS since there is no specific time-line in these situations, the characters are at their prime meaning they have all their abilities ready and prepared

the difference is the jutsu is part of the user's power if you restrict it then you're just admitting Tsunade is weaker, while a trap well it's just a trap something you planned in order to defeat a specific enemy depending on his abilities

yes.. they are equal more or less.. all of them has the same level of skills only in different categories.. Jiraiya and Orochimaru are best suited in the front lines while Tsunade acts as the main support.. they are the best team combo, you have Orochimaru as the as the main offense.. with his wide array of jutsu and forbidden techniques while Jiraiya has always based his jutsu style as defensive ones.. Jiraiya has the best defense as he is very proficient with barrier based jutsus.. on the other hand, you have Tsunade, the greatest medic ninja who cannot easily be killed..

i'm not a die hard Tsunade fan, i just don't like how some people downplays her so much.. she is more that meets the eye.. just because she doen't have flashy justus like the others, she is still the best on what she does.. and point is, i would rather have her on my side than against me.. she has proven her worth against Edo Madara, who is far even more powerful than the Madara her grandfather fought..

Very very cute thread, though let's be honest here, did a weakened Orochimaru not toy with 4 Tailed Naruto? What happened when Jiraiya did this? Oh yeah, he almost died. Moreover, did a weakened Orochimaru not play around with Tsunade and Jiraiya in Part 1? Hmm, not too sure. And in my eyes, having the four Hokage as your personal Edo's, one of which is an extremely intelligent S/T user, another one who is also an S/T user, one who was said to have completely mastered the Shinobi arts and one who is said to have hype on par with the Rikudo Sennin, is absolutely more than enough for you to be the #1 strongest person in the Narutoverse. Your mythology argument is nice and all, but that's just where Kishi got the idea of their character from, and not necessarily their power levels from, he may have kept their power the same initially, though that has clearly changed. Also note that it's become increasingly obvious during recent Manga (thereby canonical) portrayal that Orochimaru is tiers and tiers above the other Sannin via his present existence and subjugation over 4 Hokage. There's no debating it.
