Those black branches coming from the zetsu bodies may in fact be chakra rods here's why:

Where do the chakra rods come from in the first place?

They come from the Gedo Mazo's belly buttin like an umbilical cord.

Also note that the Gedo Mazo and it's chakra rods seems to be sprouting from the giant lotus from Hashi's dna.

It may also be possible that the chakra rods may be a mokuton mutation.
