Its obvious Kakashi was stilll young, and he didn't have as much knowlege about the sharingan as he does now currently.
He probably never even heard about the MS then, and of course he had to find out on his own that he had it, most likely during his training.

What other creditable explanation other than this can you come up with, explaining how Kakashi gained the MS? Obito and Rin were Kakashis closes friends besides Guy that we know about. Maybe Kishi should've invented another friend that Kakashi kills during the time skip to make us feel better.

Its because Kakashi didn't awaken the MS so he never knew he had it. Obito awoken the MS for both of them. Remember what Madara said to Obito about the requirements of unlocking the full potential of the sharigan(he is obviously talking about the MS). Obito still had a link to the eye he gave Kakashi. This is why he was able to see what Kakashi was seeing for that moment of time. Itachi pretty much says its impossible for a non Uchiha to unlock the full powers of the sharigan(unless you have Hashirama's chakara). So he was shocked when he found out that Kakashi had the MS. Kakashi said himself during his fight with Deidara that he just achieved the MS. What he probably meant was he found out how to trigger it most likely.
