In the latest chapter Zetsu says "I can see why Madara chose you.I thought obito slipped through the rock by using his ms or sometging but it shwed him getting his ms from watching kakashi kill rin..I believe madara set obito up somehow.

well it could also be that madara didnt plan it but when he saw obito he wondered if he could wait 4 another uchiha to come his way, but when obito proved himself he knew that obito was the one
