I think, if Asuma used this jutsu to Hidan, he would be choped by this technique and Asuma wouldn't have to die. (maybe Kakuzu would join to fight, but he can't kill them all than reinforcement will come)

Also I think he uses ash pile burning, from which Hidan will not die..:shrug:

I'm assuming you mean the jutsu he first showed against InoShikaCho?
Remember this page though?
Ash cloud probably has more AoE than his other technique. Hidan was already showing off his acrobatic skills by dodging all of shadows, so he thought that he might as well go for something that can't be avoided as easily.
