[Discussion] Small detail regarding Kisame and Tobi's meeting

Remember when Tobi first revealed himself to Kisame?

I just found this on the wiki:

When Tobi reveals his face to Kisame Hoshigaki, the latter identifies him with "Mizukage-sama" (水影様, Mizukage-sama).[50] In the tankōbon version, he instead refers to Tobi using "former Mizukage-sama" (元水影様, Moto-Mizukage-sama).[51]

That means it was fixed to "former Mizukage-sama" in the newer tankobon version. Now I think we can interpret this in two ways:

1. Kisame was being a bit sarcastic, which means he was only saying that Madara/Tobi can now stop pretending to be the Mizukage, thus making him the former Mizukage in a way. This is more probable for now.

2. It means that he recognized him as the Third Mizukage, meaning that at some point Madara had some affiliation with the Hidden Mist, perhaps because of his hatred towards Konoha. Not sure how this would fit into the timeline, but I would label is as improbable.

This particular part of the Tobi/Obit thing still bugs me. How could Kisame recognize him as Madara? I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be fooled by a transformation jutsu. What do you think?

It's because Tobi/Obito was pulling the strings on the Third Mizukage and Kisame is "referring" to Obito as the Mizukage because Obito was controlling him.

Yagura (whom Tobi was controlling) was the Fourth Mizukage. I was referring to the one before him (The Third Mizukage), about whom we still have no info in the manga whatsoever.

when kisame had met obito 1st after obtaining samehada....obito introduced himself as madara....kisame had known that there was an uchiha named madara in the past but he had never seen him in person....so he took obito's for granted that he is UCHIHA MADARA...and joined akatsuki....

now when tobi showed his face in the scenario u mentioned....kisame recognized him....as MADARA.....simple.

This is correct. Obito was Madara to Kisame, not Obito, because Obito had presented himself as Madara and the revelation for Kisame was that Akatsuki Tobi was the same guy that controlled Yagura, the name is not the important thing here

Yes I see, but I still doubt an experienced shinobi like Kisame wouldn't know how Madara Uchiha looks like. If nothing else, his giant friggin' statue is at the Valley Of End.

I capitulate, I guess you are both right :D Still, the reference to the Third Mizukage might be interesting

Alright I have made some sick long threads on this a while back, so I got all the details copied somewhere in a lost brain channel. But before I can perfectly answer your question, I need to make something clear:

He didn't call him mizukage in that manga page you are showing, he really called him former-mizukage? In that case it is easy:

None the less it simply means the same. Cause he was former mizukage in that situation as well - since Yagura died Mei became mizukage, thus Madara wasn't mizukage any longer.

We still have no knowledge about the 3rd mizukage, he/she isn't even mentioned once in the entire manga. It has become more likely that there never was a 3rd mizukage, but I guess we will know in time. And given that the manga should end in a year, I doubt we will ever get a good explanation on this matter.
