[Discussion] Obito during part one.

So, thinking back to the beginning of part two, we remember that the Akatsuki were operating just fine, and Obito wasn't even there yet. After the Rescue Gaara arc, was when we first saw Obito when Zetsu and him went to get Sasori's ring. Now... we know that Obito and Zetsu go way back, so why was he ASKING Zetsu if he could join now that there was an open spot?

Zetsu also made it seems as though he'd JUST met/found 'Tobi' even though they were alone.

So, my question is, what was Obito doing in part one? He wasn't with Akatsuki. No one IN Akatsuki knew Tobi until Zetsu brought him, except Itachi (I assume). I see how he could have been leading it, using Nagato as a puppet from the shadows, but why only then did he choose to reveal himself? and with such a ridiculous false persona?

He had to keep a really low profile when he joined akat

He must have had contact with Nagato at this time. So he was associated with Akatsuki. If you remember the uchiha incident, a few years before part 1. He took part in it.

But before and after the uchiha incident? He was in control of Yagura in this time. It is still unknown what his purpose of controlling the mizukage and kirigakure. But he did obtain a few things while doing it. Members for Akatsuki. He probably had contact to Orochimaru and Sasori as well. According to my calculations, Oro, Sasori, and Kakuzu all joined akatsuki first, though the order is unknown. Then Itachi, then Kisame, Itachi and Kisame must have joined the same year, and the time Kisame killed his "boss" was the same year as Itachi killed the uchiha clan.

plot....simply at that time kishi didnt want tobi to be special, and just wanted to make the good boy act....its posible that good boy tobi is spiral zetsu....so at that time couldve been spiral asking main if he could join...as others have pointed out it could be they were joking

so basically its part of the plot so we dont know anything, spiral zetsu, or just him joking

Never managed to find a good explanation for that, maybe they were just messing around.

Kisame knew tobi before akatsuki.. or at least kisame thought he knew - im not too sure there.

Obito was acting, but the weird thing is, why did Obito let the real 'tobi' zetsu act like that even when nobody was around him?

Well,first of all he was in Akatsuki for for the entirety of Shippuden. One of the more recent Manga chapters showed a flashback of Obito talking to Nagato and the other two about the state of the ninja world and Nagato's aspirations. When Pein was talking with Konan before the assault on Konoha he mentioned not being strong enough to defeat the one who has been pulling the strings the whole time, which he was referring to Tobi who we now know is Obito. As for the Tobi persona, I have a couple different answrrs. One, Kishi wanted to throw out a hint for us but not make it too obvious. Obito and Tobi sounds very similar, and I feel that Tobi's relationship with Zetsu was how he wished it could have been with Kakashi. It could have simply been that in the ninja world, you never know who is listening, so it was best to hide his most powerful weapon (his identity) in whatever way he could.

THIS sounds likely, I don't recall if the Shukaku was the first they captured or not though.
