Why did Itachi not try to kill Tobi

Itachi and Tobi both said to Sasuke that they worked together in the Uchiha Massacre. Itachi agreed to help Tobi get his revenge on the clan just as long as Tobi didnt attack Konoha or Sasuke. I know that Itachi put Amaterasu in Sasuke's eye to prevent a meeting between Tobi and Sasuke, but could Itachi have done more. Furthermore, Itachi knew Tobi was in Akatsuki so he had ample opportunity to kill him for the good of Sasuke and Konoha. Like wise, Tobi must have known Itachi was a spy because of the way he cared for the leaf so why didn't Tobi try to kill Itachi?

itachi was a smart Shinobi and he was waiting for the right opportunity and he was still gathering information on Tobi. Tobi himself stated Itachi did not know all about Tobi. So it is possible that he died before he had a plan to deal with Tobi

Itachi wanted to fight Sasuke and die then and there, why risk taking damage or getting himself killed before.

they did not trust each other though and kept secrets regarding their powers, jutsus, etc, which also means that both Tobi and Itachi would have major disadvantages in a fight and both would take serious damage, it's more a question of who would be taken out first. and due to Itachi's illness probably Tobi would get the upper hand.

ps. Itachi is a proficient sharingan user who also happens to be an Uchiha AKA born with a sharingan. he obviously has better chances against Tobi than Naruto, Kakashi and Gai as he understands sharingan related techniques better. just saying that sometimes understanding your opponent can be far more important than having amazing firepower, not that he lacks in that department either.
