      Internet piracy

Ok i am curious as to how the people on NB look towards piracy and downloading.
Me I think it should be legalised, companies make enough money as it is and as long as i dont get to watch my favorite tv show how, where and when i want i'll keep on downloading.
If however they would make it so that i would be able to download anything i want anytime in high quality with high speeds for lets say 10-20 bucks a month i wouldn't mind paying.

say downloading is piracy to the people being abducted by somali pirates, downloading is only a crime because it takes money away from millionaires.

its a ridiculous argument these days anyway, how are these 2 scenarios any different? :-

1 - you decide you want to listen to some music while walking to work, you put youtube on your phone and listen to whatever music you want, for free.

2 - you decide you want to listen to some music while walking to work, you download an album and play it on your phone, for free.

Youtube may pay the uploader(indirectly) for the vid, a mp3 site won't.

Internet piracy's bad, the manga thing is a different issue since we don't get our hands on the manga as quick as the Japanese.

      Piracy sucks >_>

I think this meme says it best!

I'm much more inclined to give indie projects my money (i.e. games like minecraft/Amnesia) than major corporations that have money spilling out of every orifice!

I'm in the moral grey-zone. If you really can't afford it then dl it... if you can then buy/support it.

I get my manga for free but I also buy the series' I really enjoy/feel deserve my money for example.

      Re: Internet piracy

      Piracy is bad and illegal

the people who are saying its ok is not seeing the whole picture .....

consider this if your are downloading a movie from a torrent site its not gonna impact anyone much and the reason is NOT because the movie producers are mostly multi million dollar corporation
the actual reason is because there are still many people(millions of people) who would want to see the movie in theater in a big screen in 3D etc...etc
even me.... i download many movies from torrents but also see the same movie atleast one time in theater for the effects and have a nice time with frnds

but the same cannot be said to every industry .... especially s/w industry and music industry

in s/w industry very little people actually buy original s/w from the company and pay for it .....
and unlike in movie industry there is no difference between the end product ....i.e you get the same s/w even if its pirated so less and less people would buy that software so many small time software companies are affected ....of course big names such as MS and Apple will survive it bcos they have already made a TM and loyal followers
but its not the same for second tire small s/w companies

so by s/w piracy you are actually forcing people to lose their jobs

The internet is the only information source that's not controlled by the government, so they want to criminalize internet piracy to implement a reason to get a grip on the internet.

for 10 bucks a month you can download as many songs as you want....through the zune service(now being called xbox music).....it is a good deal...

but to piracy...we all have done it....but here is how it should be...we should be able to buy directly from the musician(would be cheaper) and we would be supporting the musician, and not an entire music company....i think piracy is alright if just used a little bit(ie not downloading terabytes of stuff)so downloading a few songs or movies isnt wrong...but mostly it should be for trial like purposes

example, and dont hate it is only an example...i enjoy listening to many artists...i enjoy a artist named coldplay....i downloaded the album to try it out, before i wasted my money for buying a album i never heard before(mylo) by doing that i saved my money for a album i didnt like and bought something else with the money.......

anyways...like it or not, piracy is wrong...how wrong it is should be up to you and the artist....however...the government shouldnt stop piracy, by banning it and stuff....that interferes with freedom....if a artist is being ripped off and his music and stuff free for download he should be able to go after the website torrent etc, that is doing so....but only if he is taking legal action....

regardless of what i have said piracy(for personal use) is in the grey area....if someone sells pirated material that is very wrong...i personally only get music from youtube currently, since youtube does support the artists....

simply to explaiin piracy for personal use....if you dont have money but you like the artist it is ok...not great , just ok as in acceptable....if you have money then you should buy the stuff.....i used to not have money but now that i do i buy stuff(also stuff bought is usually better quality...

      Re: Internet piracy

Not voting on the poll since it's worded to make piracy seem like a good thing. I don't think you understand. Listening to the song on YouTube gives it a view and if there's an ad that plays then the artist is going to make something from that, given it's the artists channel of course and not someone that uploaded it just for gigglyshits.

It's best to put yourself in their shoes. Imagine if you wrote an awesome song and everybody loves it, it's getting lots of attention and a studio just picked it up, they're going to make you famous as you finish an album. However, a bunch of little jerks decided to spread your stuff around on torrents and now people don't even visit your YouTube page anymore. It's over before it began because you didn't make any money off it. You're screwed and it's time to go back to your 9 to 5 job.

True, this would only happen in a world where no one cared about concerts and so forth, you'd still make some serious cash if you started to perform live. However, if we just let piracy go unchecked then that could happen.

Now, imagine a world where artists stopped making songs, movies weren't being made and so forth simply because all the money was sucked out of the industry by piracy. Not that it's likely to happen, but still, just imagine it...wouldn't you feel pretty awful? Not only that, now the entertainment industry is gone, what the hell are you gonna' do now? Enjoy sitting in an empty theater eating popcorn and wishing something would just freaking play on the screen.

while it is sorta criminal, i agree completely. the way that piracy is being combated is good....the people being pirated ask the internet service providers to decline service to the people who pirate...simply piracy can be combated without the government getting involved....

      Re: Internet piracy

well if you are a genuine artist, you wouldnt even make music for the money to begin with.
and for me, if i download a album i would still sometimes go to youtube to listen to their song just because its easier or i would like to make a comment or what not.
as for tv shows, imo its the fault of the industry for controlling their shows on how and where they are allowed to be on tv.
you really think i am gonna wait 6 months to a year for the new Dexter when its on the net the next day...please, like that is ever gonna happen to any fan with a internet connection who doest live in the states. same goes for all the other tv shows that are out there.
like i said, if there was a way i could see any show anytime i want i would be happy to pay for it, but since the industry still lives in the 80's and are refusing to go allong with the times i'd say its their own fault.
Piracy excists because the industry still controls its content to much, i'd say make it available world wide for a decent price and piracy would be a whole of a lot less.
so untill that happens im going for option A
