How fast can you read? Don't just skip to FI Arc, it's the worst one >_< (and even then it's nice)
Tell you what, read the first chapter, I recommend it, and if you wanna carry on, do it, if you don't, don't.
Because once you read the first chapter, you just won't(can't) turn back.
On that note, I don't recommend you watch the anime till you catch up to some 50 eps with the manga, because the quality at the beginning sucks.

Do not catch up. Honestly, nothing beats the ride of a story. Waiting for the next release is painful, especially if you love the story, or atleast it feels different because you've caught up. Just take your time, watch an episode a week or something. Enjoy it.
