Gaara's sand intercepted A before at the 5 kage summit.

because A was looking for a power kick not speed kick, he used his speed to vanish then he punched, his hand caught fire, he blatently punched again and went for a kick. obviously he wasn't moving a high speed since everybody in the room was able to see him and comment on what he was doing. And if you say i'm wrong karin is talking about it being smart that sauske covered himself in flames because he couldn't follow a with his eyes.
