also he experimented with Senju DNA on Danzo, so he knew how to use it + Oro had a theory about how to get the Rinnegan.

Slip his soul into it, the jutsu is called Fushi Tensei. Every four years, he's supposed to change if the 'container' rejects him but this could be different if he found the right container, that's presumably why he spent so long preparing for Sasuke, plus his Sharingan is one of the big bonuses for him.
