Why does everyone think Itachi is so "good"

Itachi's treatment by fans of Naruto really annoys me. To recall - this is the man who

1) Eliminated most of the Uchiha, men, women and children in a brutal genocide whose justification is quite tenuous

2) Brutally mindraped Sasuke

3) Brutally mindraped

4) Almost killed Sasuke (a stray shuriken or an attack that accidentally hit Sasuke MIGHT have actually killed him)

5) Is basically responsible for the way Sasuke is now

6) Asked Kisame to hack Naruto's limbs off

Now; if he were considered an idiotic well intentioned extremist, or even a lying villain - it wouldn't annoy me so much. But no, he's a "good guy". Just because Itachi wanted some good things to come out of it, and was willing to carry out Danzou's plan doesn't mean he was a "good guy". He really ought not to be given an omniscient morality license IMO.

What do you guys think?

He's a complicated character. While his actions weren't really good, ultimately he did most of them to protect his brother because he loved Sasuke too much to see him hurt - and considering a lot of people have siblings, they can imagine they would do anything to keep their siblings safe.

So while he's not really good, he's not really evil either

Stencil is right,I don't like itachi because he won the shinobi brother of the year award. He's in my top simply for his badassery and his analytical abilitys. He plans so far ahead of everyone and even when it didn't go as planned it still ended up benifiting the situation at hand.

Itachi tried to make the best out of "Realism" but failed in the long run. He really did try hard, and maybe even USSJ would agree to that. When he was revived, he acknowledged his failure and instead put his faith in Naruto (changing into a more idealistic person). Really, Good vs. Evil isn't a big a factor as Realism vs. Idealism. The latter is a much stronger fight.

1) He what he had to do to prevent a 4th Shinobi World War.

2) Even though he should Sasuke terrible images, Sasuke didn't become a psycho from the genjutsu.

5) Actually, Obito and the elders are responsible for that. You seem to forget that Sasuke had no evil intentions until Obito talked to him.

Determining whether or not Itachi is good or bad is a harder question than you might think. Itachi was never evil, but you could argue with his actions. But overall, you seem to be missing the bigger picture about it all, and just pointing out the negative stuff he did.

We've all seen our good intentions manipulated by someone whose been able to identify and exploit both our weaknesses and our power. Itachi=Nagato=Naruto=passionate, idealistic, emotional decision-makers. Good, but gullible.
