Even if we find ourselves annoyed with Naruto - the fact that she shows interest in him is enough to add an extra dimension to her character.

Further, of all the Rookie Nine, she's second only to Naruto and Sasuke (who are tied for 1st) in terms of how much is known about their past and family. This dynamic makes her far more identifiable to most; not that everyone feels they share her past, but that everyone can compare/contrast their upbringing to hers.

In this, she is one of the few true characters in Naruto. Many of the other characters lack depth and history that make them identifiable as a 'real' character. We know more about Sasori's childhood than Sakura's (and she was sort of designed as the lead female). Obito has more back-story than Rock Lee. Kurenai's baby has an equal amount of historical development as Tenten.

Hinata is portrayed more completely than most of the other characters in the series (even though we hardly ever see her), and that character is intrinsically close to Naruto.

The only reasons I've seen people give for not liking Hinata are more to do with her hesitancy and her borderline stalker behavior (which was only portrayed a couple times in her childhood). Or they find her crush on him to be obsessive.

To be fair, people have seen much more of Sakura in a wider range of contexts to be more critical of her behavior (and develop a dislike for the trends) - but Hinata's character is just not one that people develop a dislike for in the real world. People tend to develop dislikes for those who represent an obstacle or burden - and Hinata's character just doesn't lend itself to that perception.

Though I will admit, as a guy, I find Hinata to be one of the most attractive characters in the series. She's got the curves, the tone, and the long hair. The jacket/hoodie-thing is there as a countermeasure against stares. One can throw up their supposed ages in protest, but she'd be worth waiting for.

Why do I like Hinata?

Well, because, her shiness at the beginning and the fact that she almost fainted when it came to Naruto, however, she came from that character that couldn't get past her shiness to the character that slapped some sense into Naruto now.
Even if she took from Naruto's determination, she worked her best to help however she could.
She has her bads, she has her goods.

So in the end, she's ok.

Now about why the fandom likes it, I think we all know it.

I have seen rarely true Hinata fans, and that's sad, but at least they're true to her, which I admire.

They don't do it as a tool to bash on Sakura or as a pairing. No. They like Hinata. Period.

To my knowledge, Hinata has never been portrayed in the canon without it being in Naruto's presence or within the context of Naruto (such as the war to protect him and B ).

at least sakura helped alot of people with her medic skills while all hinata does is ATTEMPT to save naruto..

If one takes a look at the databook, one can obviously see that she does more than simply attempt to save Naruto and has her role on the field (which is not actively portrayed unless it has something to do with Naruto).

Naruto has a tendency to get flustered and act somewhat erratically when posed with emotional conundrums. Naruto would have been captured by Pain. Naruto would have given in to Obito's request. Hinata directly intervened in these two key scenarios. One can even argue that her response to Naruto's encouragement during the Chunin exams helped him to develop the resolve necessary to defeat Neji (though that is stretching a tad - her defeat did affect Naruto, though saying it was a key component of his victory is, to my knowledge, not something that can be solidly supported by the canon).

She may not have nearly as much panel time dedicated to her actions (certainly not any time showing her activities outside of Naruto) - but the times she is portrayed, she's had a very decisive role to play in Naruto's life.

The only character who has such an intrinsic understanding of Naruto to be there for him during those times is Hinata. It's not merely because she's 'studied' him... it's because her own life and struggles have paralleled many of his own. She just doesn't have a fox demon sealed inside of her (... that we know of... kind of have no idea what to expect in terms of arbitrary plot armoring in Naruto).
