Symbolism of the Moon in Naruto

Just rereading the manga and stumbled across this page then decided to make a thread on the numerous symbolic references of the moon in the manga.
^Here we see Gaara mentioning "he" (Ichibi) gets blood thirsty during a full moon

^Here the full moon once again the night Itachi murdered his entire clan

^The night of the Kyuubi attack, a full moon once again

      ^Another bloody night

      And last but not least:

It seems to me that there is a connection throughout the manga with violence, the mangekyo sharingan, and bijuu all tying into the full moon some how. Perhaps because of the sealed Juubi? Im sure there are plenty of others i couldnt remember i just find all the symbolism with the moon to be very interesting.

I guess we should give Piccolo a call

But nice find, it seems Kishi already created the Juubi all the way in Part 1.

From the mythology i've studied, the moon has never symbolized death. It's always related to the ocean and to music (both obvious), but is also used a lot to represent the constant change of a protagonist. Starting at a new moon, becoming full, retreating and being reborn.

Re: Symbolism of the Moon in Naruto

OT: I always wondered why Kishi chose an Uzumaki like Naruto to be the representative of Senju in the battle of generations between Uchiha and the Senju, and maybe the answer is that the Uchiha and the Senju never fully understood each other and even though the Uzumaki were way closer to the Senju they could understand the Uchiha better than the Senju did. So that's it, the battle needed to be settled by someone close to the Senju that had the same personality as them but also with the ability to fully understand the Uchiha.

Maybe I'll make a topic about this.

I personally believe the sage to be an Uzumaki with the Senju and Uchiha powers originating with the Juubi. Many people disagree with this notion though. But it would make sense like you were saying as to why Naruto is a Uzumaki, instead of Senju.

Re: Symbolism of the Moon in Naruto

It goes back to our own understanding that during the full moon more homocides, suicides, violent assaults, robberies, ect; take place during the full moon, thus the reason for calling someone a lunatic or stating they suffer from lunacy (Luna is the latin word for moon). The moon affects us in ways we still don't understand because of it's gravitational pull and it does tend to make people more irritable and aggressive when full.

Well it could be that it ups the spirit in a few but the obvious cases. itachi pic would for examlpe look much less cool if not for the moon. A few of the connections are obvious but the sharingan->moon connection for example I think does not exist.

In literature (including novel, film, etc), an element which is repeated is called "motif" and carries significance. Moon is a motif in Naruto and YES its signifies death and disaster

Yeah i thought that as well as far as the moon being added at times for aesthetic purposes. Like during the war with the Zetsus killing everybody. However its my belief the Uchiha and Senju powers originate with the Juubi and the powers become unstable during a full moon. Obito screams like a mad man while Gaara partially releases Shukaku due to in his own words, the ichibi getting "blood thirsty during the full moon".
