From Trigun, wolfwood's full name was Nicholas D. Wolfwood. He is usually upbeat, then a complete personality change to serious and stern at times. He was quite determined with his goal, and seemed fearless.
When he died in the anime, he looked up. In his last moment, there was a smile on his face.
His middle initial was D.
It all makes sense.
