Looks

Ryu is a very muscular man with a very unique appearance. He usually wears exaggerated 1970s fashion: white suits and dark shirts with over sized collars, cuffs and lapels, plus pointy shoes. He has an exaggerated goatee that ends in an spike and sideburns that also ends in a spike.
While in battle he wore a pair of black slacks with a purple belt and black leather shoes. He also wears a short cut black vest with a purple lining that is tied together at his midsection with a plate with a cross on it. He only wears this suit when he is taking battle serious.

His crowning glory is a foot-long pompadour, which keeps getting lopped off by Asakura Yoh and others. His hair would eventually change to a boomerang shape and it would eventually grow back to its original size. It would seem that the shape of his hair is affected by his emotions, and will fall down and lose it's shape when he is extremely sad or shocked.


Personality
Ryu acted like a typical delinquent who had no respect for anyone beside himself. However, when things progress and he has some sensed knocked into him by Asakura Yoh, it is seen that he is a very passionate and emotional person who deeply cares for his friends and is ready to sacrifice anything, even himself, for them. Ryu's most commendable trait is probably his sense of loyalty, which once lead him to take an attack for Yoh which froze him, only to prove that his passion was burning so much that it melted the ice. At one point, he even cried when talking about his gratitude for Anna`s harsh training.
All of his life Ryu have been searching for a "Best Place" a passion shared by his gang and in the beginning of the series, the group would constantly look for their best place. His reason for joining Yoh in the Chuunin Exam is to find his best place.

He also has a thing for women but does not know anything about them. He is constantly shot down in front of them like when he tried to hit on Tamamura Tamao he got hit in the nether regions by Conchi.

Background Info
Ryu was the leader of a gang who bullied a lot of people in Konohagakure. He tried to pick on a kid who instead, kicked ryu's ass and knocked some sense into him. This Kid was Asakura Yoh. Ryu then started to train and became stronger, he then joined Yoh in the Chuunin Exams, both of them getting quite far and became Chuunins. Ryu -whilst at Konoha- became very good friends with Tsuna.. and when Ryu left the villlage they kept meeting in various parts of the Ninja World.

Ryu became friends with many others on the way, there third teammate in the Chuunin Exam being Faust VII, and meeting another three man cell they became close friends with, Tao Ren, Horo Horo and Chocolove. They also met another guy called Lyserg Diethel further along. After the Chuunin Exams the seven of them did a lot of missions together. Though Ryu focused on finding this "Best Place" A place which he can all his own. So he settled down in Sunagakure where he worked for Tamamura Tamao as chef at "Funbari Hot Spring".

Ryu became more social with the people of Suna, meeting a lot of people in the Tavern after work. A Rogue Ninja, Hidan (Délta) that used to hang out in the Tavern strolled up to the gates of suna and decided to challenge three specific people from Suna, Ryu was one of them and volunteered to fight. After an all out elemental clash, Ryu came out victorious even though he was underestimated severely. Coincidentally his friend Tsuna came to visit him and saw the battle from afar, he helped Ryu carry Hidan's mangled body back to Suna.

Other

WIND
When training with his Senpai; Better in the element of wind, it was picked up easily by Ryu, being the element he got to grips with most and uses a lot. And because of Ryu's Mastery of the element Wind, he is able to perform the jutsu's with only one hand seal needed for those that require them.
