    Orochimaru's Motivation

I was rereading the previous fights of the manga when I stumbled across something that really made me question who Orochimaru really is.

    Naruto 344 page 17 | One Manga

During Sasuke's fight with Orochimaru he asks him why he insists on taking drugs and transfering bodies to elongate his life. I have started to believe that Orochimaru is really not that bad of a person, but is only a child who cannot accept his parents death. Jiraiya has stated that it was after Orochimaru's parents death that Orochimaru began acting strange.

Woah, that does shed a completely different light on Orochimaru. "...but is only a child who cannot accept his parents death." You're right, all these things he has done, they resemble an upset child. I feel slightly depressed...I don't think that any of the things he did to other people were right, in fact they were disgusting and cruel but this really does show us something completely different about him. Thanks.

That's really sad, although I don't think that excuses the things he has done to people, it's still a completely new way to see his situation.

The problem was that he was not a child anymore- had not been for a long time at the time of his death or capture in the sword etc. He was a mature adult.

What Jiraiya said was probably was felt by the Third too- that's why he hesitated when he found out about Orochimaru's evil researches. But Orochimaru had derailed of the path by then, beyond the control of the good.

Oro wanted to live for forever- so that he can learn every jutsu around and made sure that it doesn't go to waste with his death- instead he wanted to be alive to live with it. ( I cannot site the manga as this is from scattered statements in the story.)

Orochimaru was quite an intellectual seeing how good a judge he was of human nature and its failings too. A great sanin and research scientist himself, he was able to manipulate a lot of people around him. Most of his followers were at least partially with him of their own free will. He was amused at Kakashi for trying to save Sasuke. He let Anko go alive even after he trained it and during chunin exams as well.

Orochimaru's decisions were never impulsive, but calculated. He knew what he was doing. He also knew his own danger when he took Sasuke in and said so when Sasuke went to him for final battle. He took the risk because Sharingan had caught his fancy and he wanted it so badly that he thought it was worth the risk. Seeing that he operated on Danzo and gave him his sharingan from Shisui, I wonder what he was going through at the time? How did Danzou manage him to operate on himself and yet not try to steal the other eye at least then and there?

With Orochimaru it was not about good or bad. He didn't think in these terms. His philosophy perhaps made him look everything in relativity. He would let you go to your death if it amused him at the moment. He might save you on whim as well.

No one knows when a psychological defect may turn to evil- but once it has taken that path, that turning point is just for academic records. An average normal person would get over it with time. A positive person would try to do some good to make up for it. A negative personality would go on negative path sooner or later- how it started means little and of not much importance- it could have been anything..

    Just my two cents...

Yes but it all started because of his inability to accept that his parents were gone. It is true that he became obsessed with power that only transpired because of his need to see his parents again. Perhaps Kishi has thrown in another flashback which has commonly been overlooked that explains his transition from immortality to power. I was planning on rereading the entire manga soon so I'll search for it. And by the way I am in no way justifying his experiments on people and what-not, only attempting to discover his motivation.

100 dead babies in one experiment = not that bad of a person because he is only depressed at his parent's deaths? No wonder criminal use that defense if people are willing to buy that.

It's true, he might do those things because he is depressed, but that doesn't make them right or even 'okay'. He's done horrible things and that's the end of it.

I'd like to applaud your ability to blatantly ignore my entire second post, and then attempt to make yourself seem so high and mighty by making everyone else sound beneath you, it really says a lot about your character. :P

I disagree. It was not that he had problems accepting his parents death. it was the wish for living for forever... remember that white snake thing?

I know it is customery to cry havoc the moment the anime is mentioned yet I rather liked the discription of Orochimaru in anime and added bits- those made him more round character.

I think checking out manga is a good move. I don't remember if the manga included the white snake part and subsequent obsession of Oro or I remember it from the anime. but, I do remember Oro wanting to learn every jutsu in the world and then seeing deaths wondering what was the point of learning it all since it's all gone when a person dies...

    Re: Orochimaru's Motivation

Orochimaru in the anime seemed to panic when he was in that library reading the jutsu and was talking to himself about how he can't possibly learn it all in one lifetime which seemed to spark his immortality jutsu. But even before that his parents had already died and he was still not evil yet it seemed.. Besides his teacher was "The Professor" of jutsu so I am sure that kinda had to impact him. He had talked about the first person to mix colors to make different colors comparing them to jutsu. I would think what helped create his evil nature. I would have to say even if his parents had not died he probably still would have been obsessed with learning all jutsu and then may or may not have been involved in Kinjutsu. He is probably one of the most interesting characters imho. Seeing him in the anime as a kid with the 3rd telling him about the white snake shows he was not always evil to the core as introduced in the beginning.

I'm pretty sure he isn't saying it's okay, he was just pointing out the cause of Orochimaru's downfall. Everyone in the manga has something happen to them to give them a reason for living or a reason for dying and I think Shisui Uchiha got it spot on.

Here's a quote for you if you need to see it again.

Ahh I see. I apologize if I came off as rude but that's how I usually post. Whose everyone else and in what way though? Didn't see your second post but in your OP you said that you didn't see him as "really not that bad of a person" because of his past/upbringing, which sounded like an excuse for his current actions. I had a similar discussion with another user about this a while back so I guess I was ready to go at it again.

Orochimaru's initial motivation as a child may have genuine in a twisted way but that innocence has been lost a long time ago and he's just a power hungry monster now. I doubt his motivation before his death/defeat had any more purpose towards the lose of his parent.
