Itachi Hokage?

Now, before the first flames or stupid-useless posts arise: Yes, this is 'What if' thread. Nothing of this will ever happen and everything in here is just immagination.

I was thinking, if the Uchiha coup d'etat wouldnt have been planed, Itachi would probably have been choosen to be the 5th Hokage. We know, that the third had very high expectations of him and that his reasoning was just like a Hokages when he was still a child. In my eyes, he had everything to be a Hokage.

The question now is, could the coup d'etat have been prevented, if the 3rd would have given up his title as Hokage and Itachi would have been elected as the new Hokage? With an Uchiha at the top, a coup d'etat wouldnt have been necessary and a civil war would have been prevented without a massacre...
On top of that, the chain of hatred between the Uchiha and the Senju would have finally been broken, since it would have been a sign of total trust to let an Uchiha be Hokage.

So why did the 3rd act that way and decided to slaughter all Uchiha instead?

Itachi was a pacifist. He was way too soft to be Hokage.

You have to realize since the times of Madara, Uchiha always wanted power and had hatred towards the people that persecuted them. I bet everyone would trust Itachi as hokage, but I honestly don't think there was a way to prevent the coup other than murdering them. Uchiha don't listen or compromise their beliefs (As we've seen with Sasuke and Itachi many times). They would possibly use Itachi to get what they want.

Giving title of hokage to a 13 year old kid wouldn't look very good also kinda seems like the senju would want to revolt then maybe? seeing as they would think they only wana appease the uchiha or something.

Of course the 3rd did not want the massacre to happen, but he did let it happen. As a Hokage you are responsible for pretty much everything that happens in the village. If it is anyones, than it is his fault for not preventing it.

like i always say about this subject, an uchiha can never be a hokage and i mean any uchiha.
the uchiha's were determined to take over (as their right), and a hokage from the uchiha's will be torn apart between what the uchiha's want and what's really good for the village (two different things) so this will end up bad anyway (the same scenario will happen again). there is no way of escaping what happened, and itachi's father showed how much they were determined even in the last moments before his death (it's either their plan works or death) and he didn't even try to talk sense into his son.
itachi indeed was wise (understood hiruzen) and because of that he didn't see any other way around it.
