Because it would make sense that one with the ability to control the tailed beasts would use them against Madara and the Nine-Tails.

madara and hashirama were all through the war at the same level, otherwise one would have killed the other. with madara having nine tails, hashirama had to have something equally powerful.

ahm, im wrong, sorry, it couldnt technicaly be called a fight, he stopped him... when he entered Naruto's consience while his fight with Pain got in the wrong direction.He said then that he had found out that someone had controlled the Fox while its misterious appearance.
And im pretty sure that Madara stated that also.
