Well if you think about it, it's not so different than it is now. Right now a nuclear power can take out a contenient within hours( hundreds of nukes creating fallout and deadly radiation that spreads by wind).

If we had that sort of power, there would still be a nuclear deterrent.

Dont we have enough fire power to destroy the Eath itself a few times over? or at least all life on it?

Re: What if humans had weapons/firepower to erase an entire continent?

The original, November 1961 A.E.C. estimate of the yield was 55–60 Mt, but since 1991 all Russian sources have stated its yield as 50 Mt. Khrushchev warned in a filmed speech to the Supreme Soviet of the existence of a 100 Mt bomb (technically the design was capable of this yield). Although simplistic fireball calculations predicted the fireball would impact the ground, the bomb's own shock wave reflected back and prevented this.[9] The fireball reached nearly as high as the altitude of the release plane and was visible at almost 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) away from where it ascended. The subsequent mushroom cloud was about 64 kilometres (40 mi) high (over seven times the height of Mount Everest), which meant that the cloud was above the stratosphere and well inside the mesosphere when it peaked. The base of the cloud was 40 kilometres (25 mi) wide. All buildings in the village of Severny (both wooden and brick), located 55 kilometres (34 mi) from ground zero within the Sukhoy Nos test range, were destroyed. In districts hundreds of kilometers from ground zero wooden houses were destroyed, stone ones lost their roofs, windows and doors; and radio communications were interrupted for almost one hour. One participant in the test saw a bright flash through dark goggles and felt the effects of a thermal pulse even at a distance of 270 kilometres (170 mi). The heat from the explosion could have caused third-degree burns 100 km (62 mi) away from ground zero. A shock wave was observed in the air at Dikson settlement 700 kilometres (430 mi) away; windowpanes were partially broken to distances of 900 kilometres (560 mi).[10] Atmospheric focusing caused blast damage at even greater distances, breaking windows in Norway and Finland. The seismic shock[verification needed] created by the detonation was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth.[11] Its seismic body wave magnitude was about 5 to 5.25.[9] The energy yield was around 8.1 on the Richter scale but, since the bomb was detonated in air rather than underground, most of the energy was not converted to seismic waves. The TNT equivalent of the 50 Mt test could be represented by a cube of TNT 312 metres (1023 feet) on a side, approximately the height of the Eiffel Tower.

Continental busting weapons in a single stroke? I think not, it requires more then 1 and a half Petetons of force to eradicate a continent like Australia.

A nuke at best has at least 5 megatons worth of destructive power. Which is an outright city level destruction regarding the AOE. But soon, we will have such weapons considering how vastly and rapidly technology is progressing

Re: What if humans had weapons/firepower to erase an entire continent?

us humans have already surpassed weapons capable of destroying continents. we have almost pushed fission weapons to their very limits, and these weapons can, in fact destroy whole ocntinents (albeit smaller ones like maybe europe)
but still, if such weapons are used (which i greatly doubt) there would be a mass destruction and the destruction due to the blast itself will not be that devastating as its after-effecrts. Although, i honestly doubt that they may happen. us humans, however twisted and ****ed up, have always used atleast a part of our senses when faced with complete nad utter extermination. I mean, its when we are pushed up against a wall, the true nature of humanity comes into the fray. Except during those times, we can eternally speculate on the means of warfare, destruction, etc. I honestly feel mass destruction of anything bigger than small towns due to man-made means other than global warming is not possible, at least for the near future.

Nice post! I've went over many sources and couldn't find anything regarding mankind possessing continental destruction weapons/artillery lol

Usually even a high tier nuke attack is no more then a city level or possibly higher, nukes are usually ranging from above town level to outright city busting. Even taking out a large country can produce minor worldwide after effects. But even so, such destructive power would be kept classified from public, since it might cause panics around the globe lol.....it'd be terrifieing if someone just tells u "oh hey dude, we got life wiping destructive power, if we want, we can destroy all fukin life on the globe with a single full scale attack!" lol, hate to be the bearer of bad news mate...xD

Destroying a continent is AN EXTEMELY HIGH scale attack, to be able to completely eradicate a content from the globe instantly requires at least 40 exatons of yield on base level....which is damn fukin high. lol to be able to generate such destructive energy is devastating. : (

The after effects from a conitnents attack is initially a life wiper, If such level of attack Is launched, it's extinction, unless they can figure out a way to escape/shield themselves from the hot micro debris, thunderstorms caused by the after effects.

Indeed exactly, when ur pushed against a wall and u know ur screwed, you'd just try any means neccary to escape that fray, such are humans I suppose lol....

Re: What if humans had weapons/firepower to erase an entire continent?

We do have the fire power to destroy a continent, not wipe it of a map but cerainly "kill" everything and make it uninhabitable

Doesnt matter how much you hate nukes there is still the fact that most likely if it werent for them the cold war would have been a lot more bloody

why would we develop a weapon that could flatten a continent in 1 shot? No country would be stupid enough to even try because of the backlash and no country in the world (with a possible exception of irrational people from the likes of NK and those who would be stupid enough do not have the resources not to mention they wouldnt mention it for fear Of being ridiculed and made fun of on a global scale) would be idiotic enough to ever do anything like that

Sorry but this topic is really ridiculous if were talking reality I actually feel weird talking about it , if were talking fiction thats a bit different

Is it just me or does discussing nuclear weapoms and classifying them as "city tier" seem very very weird and sounds like it shouldnt be taken seriously?

Also something that could wipe an entire continent out (like a massive meteor) wouldnt just wipe a continent, a blast doesnt only travel to the sides it travels im all directions, not to mention you cant tear a f?cking hole into the planet and be done with it ... People should understand that

Well we do already have enough Nuclear Weapons to blow up all the land on the planet. I would be highly against the building of it.. I doubt anyone is stupid enough to use it - any government [as stupid as they are].. an organization might use it though if they can get their hands on it.

And why would they make a weapon that could flatten an entire city? Or even multiple cities?

I never said I hate nukes, and I know that. ur being a straw man.

No country would be stupid enough to even try because of the backlash and no country in the world
Which is only an assumption, and how many people in the world think the same way? Not everyone does, it's in humanity nature to do everything they could to carve out a path for survival, specially when ur backed into a corner, it wouldn't suprise u if they did. When messed up people can posses such powers, they might willingly use it, It's how it's been for centuries, many people will consider it stupid. But even so, the world isn't ur best friend. shit happens here

Sorry but this topic is really ridiculous if were talking reality I actually feel weird talking about it
Then why bother even writing all that? if u really think the topic is weird then simply don't talk about it, And yet u found the topic ridiculous u still wasted ur time, bothered to write such a long Text. It's a general discussion. It came on my mind so I shared it. Thinks the topic is ridiculous, and feels weird talking about it, still bothers to write over 16 lines....yes very legit

Is it just me or does discussing nuclear weapoms and classifying them as "city tier" seem very very weird and sounds like it shouldnt be taken seriously?
When I'm referring to as "city tiers" I'm referring a nuke that can carry at least 2 or more megatons worth of destructive energy. And have an AOE of a city like Karachi, New York and many other. It's the best way to quantify the AOE when ur labelling the attack as ...town level, city level, country level .......regarding AOE ...

Also something that could wipe an entire continent out (like a massive meteor) wouldnt just wipe a continent, a blast doesnt only travel to the sides it travels im all directions, not to mention you cant tear a f?cking hole into the planet and be done with it ... People should understand that
Nobody said they tear holes in the fuking planet, I'm only counting regarding the AOE, and meteors came into this? LMFAO!! Ur trying to look like a smartass.... and yeah ofc, that's blatantly obvious.

I'm practically implying any attack with a destrucive force that has an area of effect of a continental level destruction attack at most, to be considered to destroy an entire continent in a singular stroke which requires many exatons of yield on base level, and the impact of a metor would be variable considering at the speed and force it's hits the ground and accounting its size. And what does meteors have to do with this anyway? ...smh

I said it was ridiculous but I never said it wasnt fun, an it is ridiculous, but just because a topic isnt based in reality Doesnt mean I dont like thinking about it a bit, its the same with say ... How i met your mother, I think the show is stupid and in general I feel kinda embarassed for liking it, but I do, its a guilty pleasure

I said that because only on an anime site would you see a thermonuclear bomb labeled as "city tier"

first of all, whats blatantly obvious?

You cant make a blast big enough to destroy ... Say Europe and expect it to end at that, THATS what I meant by "you cant tear a f?cking hole in the planet and be done with it" and if you wanted to wipe out an entire continent you would indeed need to tare a hole into the planet

Well if an attack can Create an AOE and spread out to at least continent level, it's still a content level based attack, it'd be more of a gigantic crater on the earths crust then a hole lol.

Yes its a crater but a pretty damn big one and a crater is a hole, and it wouldnt just be a crater, there would be Violent earthquakes, debris, water would drain, shockwave around the world, a tectonic plate would be more or less erased, lava, ...

I know, a continental attack is primitively a life wiper, the fuked up after effects and thunderstorms of micro hot debris. Can Cause disruption among the tectonic plate, yes, tempreture would rise significantly, many more devastating stuff can be mentioned =/

Ummmm we already do , I won't be surprised if they have planet busters already .... Ppl think we slack on technology but half the ufo's ppl see are homegrown made right here on our planet .

You should look up tesla's death ray and the fact that govt came out a couple moths ago saying that they had made a heart attack gun in the 80's and they actually used it to kill mafia bosses. A heart attack gun I'm the 8o's ...imagine now ???
