Why is it that no one does tournament arcs correctly?

I have seen tons and tons of action anime, and overall to me; sometimes the best parts can be the tournament. I mean come on, chuunin exams began nearly if not 13 years ago and that arc is still called revolutionary and the best arc in all of the series.

DBZ had several memorable and interesting tourneys, not counting cell saga as that was for the fate of the planet.

Yu Yu Hakusho is said to have the best tournament arc in all of fiction.

But it seems as I look at tournaments nowadays, NO ONE Can do them right.. Like what the **** is Oda doing with his tournament arc? Where are the shocks? Why do people like bleach try not to do one? Why does stuff like fairy tail (well, if you could even call that a tournament) mess the wonderfulness of a tournament up? It's pathetic.

Are there any more examples of a tournament done terribly wrong/right?

Re: Why is it that no one does tournament arcs correctly?

This isn't a tournament arc. This an arc that happens to include a tournament. Most tournament arcs are considered simple because it can simply be "There's a prize, all these people want the prize, so they fight". Tournament arcs are pretty lazy arcs really.

Kishi did a great job with the Chunin Exams because there was a lot of underlying messages in the fighting.

Oda is doing a good job so far with the tournament because of why it's happening and the backstage stuff. This is a good tournament because it's more than fighting. But that's to be expected, it's One Piece after all.

Re: Why is it that no one does tournament arcs correctly?

good thinking, but I think its partially because everyone had beef with each other. also rouge ninjas that entered would be attacked by everyone immediately.

Overall that would be cool if that happened, maybe its possible after the war and everyone unites :D

whoops only read the first part, thought you were asking why there isn't another tournament in naruto lol oh well.
DBZ tournaments were dope. even in dragon ball!

You're correct in saying YYH has the best tournament arc. Nothing can ever best it.

Lazy and overdone, quite, yet they really drag out the inner depths of a series and expresses it to it's utter core.

One Piece's tournament is bad because of the fighters, no one seems relevant enough but characters that have had more than 2 entire pages about them and them only, everyone else is fodder and the only one who was relevant just got out (chinjao) and since bartolomeo is a luffy fan, no interesting battle is going to happen there. Oda can't properly write a tournament, though he proved this in OP's only bad arc, Ring Long Land.

I was going to say...."Yu-Yu Hakusho: Dark Tournament"!

At the very least it highlights the epic moments... though people who have watched the series will probably get more out of this than someone who has not!

Yeah... Fairy Tail had a pretty good one until that finale and the fight between the Dragons. -_-

Well, the tournament has only really started. These are preliminaries, there's supposed to be fodder, this is where the small fries are taken out and the big potatoes are revealed. There could still be a battle between Luffy and Barto. You're judging something that isn't as of yet complete, wait till it's done before you decided it's a bad arc.

No one can emulate such great tournament arcs as Yu Yu Hakusho could.

Re: Why is it that no one does tournament arcs correctly?

Yu Yu Hakusho definitely had an amazing tournament. I read the tiltle and it was the first thing I was about to say in the thread. Dragonball and DBZ definitely had several great tournament arcs IMO though I can't choose which one had the better tournament arc!

I liked the Chunin exam, and I agree with what Rikerslade earlier. This isn't as much as a tournament arc as other animes do, it's more of an arc that contains a tournament. We're only in the early stages and there is much else going on with the plot other than the tournament. I'd wait a little longer to say you're disappointed but I really wouldn't consider this a tournament arc.

Alot of animes do tournaments badly though >_<

Re: Why is it that no one does tournament arcs correctly?

To be fair, One Piece isn't focused on a single tournament. It's a side show, but even then it is fairly decent.

Nothing beats Yu-Yu Hakusho in tournaments. Both Dark Tournaments were intense.

Re: Why is it that no one does tournament arcs correctly?

Yu Yu Hakusho has done it well like many others said. Another manga that did it very well was Kenichi the Mightiest Desciple. It's the only other manga I can think of with a great tournament arc. Chunin exams was awesome, although I hate that Kishi ended it early.

Kishi made the Chunnin Exams by based the Hunter Exams from HxH, hence it's not "revolutionary".

Yu Yu Hakusho...Best anime tournament ever. "DT, GG." That's the motto.

You shouldn't have even mentioned that shit excuse of an arc in Fairy Tail.

    I second this. ^

Yu Yu Hakusho does have one of the best tournament arcs that I have seen as well. Early Dragonball arcs were done pretty good as well.

Oda seems to be following that format with early preliminary matchup where a bunch of fodder are wrecked and the named guys emerge victorious. Then instead of doing a final 16, it looks like Oda will be doing a final 4. Then the donquixote family is suppose to fight too, but we don't know how that will turn out yet. Wait till the Dressrosa arc is finished before you say it is bad.

Re: Why is it that no one does tournament arcs correctly?

So far the best tournament arc in manga would be from YuYu Hakusho, besides that, I'd say is the Mahora Budokai during the School Festival Arc in Mahou Sensei Negima; the second tournament during the Magical World arc is not so great as the first one but the fight between one of the most broken characters in manga (Jack Rakan) & Negi was awesome. Although short, the Yureka (IDentITY) tournament arc was good and introduced quite a few key characters.
