    Asakojaku, Hirudora, Yoruzo

In this thread I'd like to present the mythological background of the three animals that embody Gai's techniques.

    1) Asakojaku/Morning Peacock

In Japanese myth, Mahamayuri (Kujaku Myoo) is one of the Wisdom Kings in the Buddhist Pantheon. Mahamayuri is a peaceful personification, in contrast to the wrathful attitudes of male personifications of the Wisdom Kings. Mahamayuri had the power to protect devotees from poisoning, either physical or spiritual. She usually is depicted riding a peacock.

    2) Hirudora/Noon Tiger

Byakko is the Japanese version of the Chinese White Tiger. In Chinese culture, the tiger is the king of the beasts. According to legend, the tiger's tail would turn into white when it reached the age of 500 years. In this way, the white tiger became a kind of mythological creature. It was said that the white tiger would only appear when the emperor ruled with absolute virtue, or if there was peace throughout the world. Because the color white of the Chinese five elements also represents the west, the white tiger thus became a mythological guardian of the west.

    3) Yoruzou/Evening Elephant

Kangi-ten is a god in Shingon and Tendai schools of Japanese Buddhism. He is generally considered the Japanese Buddhist form of the Hindu elephant-headed god of wisdom, Ganesha. Although Kangiten is depicted with an elephant's head like Ganesha as a single male deity, his most popular aspect is the Dual(-bodied) Kangiten or the Embracing Kangiten depicted as an elephant-headed male-female human couple standing in an embrace.

    4) Also:

Note that Gai's summon is a turtle

The Tortoise (protecting the north) is one of the Four Guardians in Chinese myth, along with the White Tiger (protecting the west), the Red Bird (protecting the south ( and I'd associate it with the peacock) and the Dragon (protecting the east >>> we might see a fourth technique by Gai in the form of a dragon).

Remember Mahamayuri, the peacock, that is a Wisdom Queen, the female conterpart for the Wisdom Kings that basically are the same as the Four Guardians in Chinese myth, except that there are five of them. In Vajrayana Buddhism, a Wisdom King is the third type of deity after Buddhas and bodhisattvas. The Five Wisdom Kings inhabit the Womb Realm. They are organized according to the directions of the compass:

    - Acala (center)
    - Trailokyavijaya (east)
    - Kundali (south)
    - Yamantaka (west)
    - Vajrayaksa (north)

    Thanks for reading

Good thread, concise and brief. Quickly explaining how Gai's moves tie in with the mythology.

    Can't wait for the dragon.
