thats the point..., kishimoto did it on purpose, he's even done manga issues dedicated solely to naruto trying to find out whats under there, but tbh, they all know, theyve all been round him while he eats...

Also back on topic, he is one of the main ones. He is the advisor to the kage council and was added as a member to it. He also was added to the council with the Feudal lord, when desiding who should be the next Hokage. He is fair more important and superior to his son. But if you meant main characters, of course shikimaru. Anyone who watch the chunin exams would know that.
