About the shikaku inside Gaara

Did the sand work on it's own to protect Gaara or did Gaara have to control it himself now?

When Shikaku was in him he could have his eyes closed and the sand would still protect him. But now that Shukaku is captured Gaara has to be more aware and has to control the sand with his own abilities, its still relatively easy for him to use since hes been using it since he was a child.

Shukaku didn't control Gaaras' defensive sand. It was imbued with his chakra and the chakra and/or blood of his mother and thats why it defends him without his doing.

Its his mothers gift and not shikakus' . He never hv to control the sand when his reflexes r neede. Bt he can very well conrol the sand as it is his power
