The Heroes of Olympus: The Lost Hero

Not sure if a thread has been made for this book and if it has, I'm pretty sure I posted in it but still

The Lost Hero is about three demi-gods (Jason, Piper, and Leo). Jason, the son of Jupiter, doesn't remember a thing before waking up on a bus. Piper, a "charm-speaking" daughter of Aphrodite who was able to talk herself into getting a brand new car for free, is being haunted by dreams saying she knows what she must do in order to get her father back. Leo, a mischievous son of Hephaestus finds that if you can't take the fire, you may need to stay out of the kitchen. They all find themselves on a trip to Camp half-blood fully unaware of what's going on. Once there, they find out that they are all the child of a god, however that's not the weird part. The twist comes in the form of Jason being the son of a Roman god (Jupiter) instead of the normal Greek god (Zeus). They also find out that a camper has gone missing and that Jason's memory missing memory may be a clue as to why it happened. Sent on a journey that takes them as far as Canada, the trio must work hard and together to help Jason's memory return and see what lies in store for them shall they fail to do so.

I got the book when it came out and finished it that day. To me, it was more dramatic and had a better storyplot than the original series and it rose above the standards set by The Last Olympian, IMO.

What are your thoughts on it?

Actually, they aren't. Jupiter was the Roman God based upon Zeus. He had the main parts of Zeus (head of olympians, Lightning God, etc). but he also had his own things. Jupiter was more warlike than the sometimes fun loving Zeus. Zeus also was more involved in human affairs, whereas Jupiter remained as far away as possible.

And some of the myths were rewrote to emphasize the difference between Zeus and Jupiter.

It's more of an additional story. At the end of Last Olympian, there was the Next Great Prophecy that Rachael made. This story is related to the prophecy and takes place (if I remember correctly) a year afterwards. It's projected to be five books in the Heroes of Olympus series.

Very good story, although, I must say that I did enjoy the previous books better.

For one, Riordan really messed up his writing style when he decided to forsake the first-person view. When making a first-person book and a third-person book, there are obviously adaptations that need to be made, and Riordan didn't make them as well as I may have liked. The main problem here is that he took away one of the great things about third-person; being able to go into far more detail than in first-person. Despite having the freedom of switching to an enemies perspective, he chose not to, and instead spoke from third-person, but in a first-person manner. I dunno if you get what I'm saying, but I mean like, he would just stick with speaking from Jason's point of view for the two chapters that he stayed at his perspective, and the same for Leo and Piper. It made it feel like Riordan was being... iffy the entire time. Like he was constantly trying to get back to first-person. He's a first-person writer, and so I believe that perhaps he should have kept it that way. It would have made the jokes, the lack of description, and other such things having to do with, for example, vocabulary, far more acceptable, realistic, and funny, respectively.

Also, I miss Percy. And Grover. And Annabeth (she's in the book, but she's more of a minor supporting character).

And I miss the funny and almost always captivating chapter titles.

Overall, though, a good story. As usually, Riordan really managed to transcend the gap between Greek mythology and modern society quite well. It's always fun figuring out what character from mythology he is hinting based off of slightly noticeable habits or things that they say at before he reveals it. The story is definitely interesting. There's a lot going on, and a lot to explain. Can't
wait for the next book.

It's called Son of Neptune, so rather than an expansion of "The Lost Hero" I'm almost expecting something more along the lines of going back in the timeline from when Percy went missing and going from there, but from his perspective instead of Jason's. Just my opinion though.

And I kinda know what you mean, the change from third-person to first person perspective. There were a few circumstances where I wanted to see how something would haved played out in Leo's mind .

And hopefully Son of Neptune picks up where Percy left off from, along with the hilarious jokes he's known to think of lol.

No, he meant that he preferred the first series where he wrote in first person whereas the Heroes of Olympus where he wrote in Third Person. He liked Percy's view of things rather than hearing a general broadcast on things.

I've read this book, I like the Percy Jackson series a bit more to be honest, although this series is sure to be an awesome one as well. I haven't read the second book "Son of Neptune" but I'd like to. I don't know where to find it though.

I like the fact that he made such an awesome character. Jason's power and abilities are great. It makes his fights more interesting and fun. Leo's is too. Those two would make a strong force if they ever fought together, although Percy and Jason would do the same as well. I still like Percy a bit better than Jason though, maybe because I like the first series first, or because I haven't read enough of the Heroes of Olympus series, I don't know.

this series is still in the first person, dont you notice how the chapter is told from the pov of the chapter titular character, it is written in a first person point of view style like the a song of ice and fire series

It's written in omniscient third-person, meaning it's written in third-person (using words like He, She, They, His, etc.) but the story-teller knows all, so to speak, which is how we know the character's thoughts/actions.

It's a branch/off follow up story. I don't want to spoil too much, but it has to do with the Next Big Prophecy at the end of the last book in the original Percy Jackson Series.
