What ninja rank was Oro..?

What ninja rank was orochimaru when he left the village to join Akatsuki? Does anyone know? Also, what about itachi...?Sasuke was a gennin, what about these 2?

Orochimaru was a Sannin at that time already.
Before he left, he was fighting along with Jiraya and Tsunade. Example against Hanzo
and they were known as the 3 legendary Sannins.

Itachi...well Itachi was already in the ANBU so I guess that makes him a Jonin when he left.

Sannin isn't really a rank. It's a title. Orochimaru was technically a Jounin when he left Konoha

yah..being a sannin it does not mean you do have a necessary position to ninja rank,it was a merely title given after they fought and won the war against Hanzo

jounins like the sannins and the 7 swordsmen of the hidden mist got their title for being special. so they are thought to be higher than regular jounins on skill and such. they are therefor considered being higher rank than jounins even if there is no official village rank for them. other examples are the 12 guardian dudes which asuma was a part of and akatsuki.

Well, Sasuke wasn't officially Chuunin. Genma just said that he's chuunin level. Shikamaru was the only one to receive the title of the chuunin in that exam.

S-Rank is really only used to refer to techniques, missions, and missing-nin like your link says. Orochimaru was a jonin when he left just a very high level jonin.
