burn through? Amaterasu is not heat seeking missles. they go in the direction of where the MS user is looking at and whatever the first thing they hit is the thing they burn..

Itachi had his Amaterasu trail Sasuke because Itachi was trailing him with his own eyes with nothing in the flames path to intersect.

but for Gaara, Sasuke sent 3 flames at him and Gaara intersected with his flames..

another example is Sasuke sent flames at Raikage and A dodged it and the flames burned the samurai right behind A..

another way to answer your question is that the flames didnt burn through his sand is because Gaara is Kazekage.. what do you expect..?

Dont forget sand is made up of grainsand garra could easly let the affected area burn away amaterasu only burns what the user sees. so what i guess i am tryiong to say is that garra most likely seperated the sand so it didnt spread like it did back in Itachis n Sasuke fight

like previously stated by others the defensive power of Garras sand is very unique it's able to repel almost all attacks very efficiently due to its chakra density and you can't exactly set fire to sand anyway =P just sayin'

If sasuke would have stared at one spot i think they would have gone through, but he just sent the flame their like a shot from the gun and got intercepted and slowly started burning through. It couldn't burn through. also amaterasu can catch anything on fire so Emerica16 point is invalid in my opinion(not trying to be mean just what i think). also when you burn... er melt sand it makes glass. also i'm guessing because of the high chakra density it was burning through very slowly, just like how the raikage's arm burned slow enough for him to chop it off before it spread.

Wat I think is that
1. Sasuke may be too tired to to do that.
2.Fire can't burn fire.
3. Sasukes' amataretsu didn't burn susanoo as it was a absolute defence, so the sand also didn't burn as it was absolute defence.
4. Also, if u would notice, the fire was continuosly burning on the parts whr it struck, as sand is not a good conductor so it didn't expand bt the fire kept on burning. It tells that Amataretsu burns only that which comes in its contact and not anything which comes in contact with the thing getting burnt

If I was Gara I would and had sand that was burning I would have put it in the 2 tailed beasts litter box, and let the cloud deal with it. But since they were at the kage summit thats not in the cloud, I would have flicked it at everyone else other than Kankuro, and Tamari.

Yeah, to kind of elaborate a little more the sand that Gara carries in his gourd(which seems to have gotten bigger imo he might have a medical issue could be a gourder ehehe bad pun...), is for his Ultimate defencse and its infused with high amounts of chakra which gives him the ability to manipulate it, and makes it stronger ect. And also like other people are saying sand dosent burn or ignite very easily.

If sasuke said that then he isn't very smart, people have been making glass since who knows when and since the black flame is touted as some super attack he shouldn't have a problem. The flame should melt the sand leaving only garas chakra, the sand would be replaced by garas reserve of sand but when it runs out and if there's no natural sand for gara to use he might be done for.

lol it doesnt die out it just burns it target to nothing

and just an FWI it spreads on stuff thats burnable ie wood not sand only the user can cancel it out amaterasu by canceling the MS but when itachi accidently set the forest on fire where he fought sasuke he was concertrating on sasuke and said screw that my brother is gonna kill me so he didnt bother stopping the flames and why yamato had to raise the earth so it wouldnt spread and cause a large forrest fire that could never be put out O.O
