It seems that new members often misuse the Sharingan, exaggerating and denaturing its abilities. In this thread, common mistakes will be pointed out and corrected with examples.
1- See through the chakra flow. The Sharingan can tell if a person is under a genjutsu because the person's chakra flow would be irregular.
2- Incredible clarity of perception, allowing them to easily recognize genjutsu and different forms of chakra
3- Ability to memorize any technique that he or she witnesses, apart from other KG techniques. The user can memorize ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu with perfect accuracy, allowing the user to use the techniques as his own.
• The first point isn’t textually used by members (almost no one uses it to see if their opponents are under a genjutsu), instead they use it to spot their opponent on the field by tracking their chakra. There is nothing wrong with doing so, but in the midst of a fight, members tend to forgot they have a Sharingan and start using their dojutsu like it was a Byakugan. It’s not because one can see chakra the you will automatically pinpoint it on the field.
Example:
Ninja 1’s hands are hidden from Ninja 2 (who’s a Sharingan user). Ninja 1 then perform a very common earth jutsu;
(Doton: Ganchuusou) - Earth Style: Stone Spikes
Rank: C
Type: Attack
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: 30
Description: The user creates spikes of earth that come up from the ground to stab the enemy. This jutsu can be made in a short or mid distace but the jutsu its self is made of a 6 foot radius of spikes.
In this very situation, Ninja 2 has no ways to know what kind of attack is coming since the earth being used is right under his feet, hence Ninja 2 would have to be looking down to see the chakra used for this earth jutsu. Furthermore, Ninja 2 did not see the handseals used by ninja one, making it impossible to know what jutsu he used.
• Moving on to number two. This is one of the most misunderstood/misused ability of the Sharingan: “recognize genjutsu and different forms of chakra”. Many, many members use this ability to differentiate their enemies from other “source” of chakra on the field. An example will speak for itself.
Example:
Ninja 1 cast the hidden mist jutsu and hides in it. Ninja 2 (a Sharingan user) will pinpoint his location in the mist.
This is a blatant mistake. Since its Ninja 1’s chakra that is infused in the mist, Ninja 1 cannot be found in it. This was first demonstrated when Kakashi fought with Zabuza.
What needs to be understood from this is that the Sharingan can differentiate chakra between different shinobis. Hence, ninja 1 can hide with his own chakra.
• There are only two things worth mentioning with the 3rd point. First, like I said before, a Sharingan user needs to see his opponent’s hands in order to know what jutsu he’ll be using. Secondly, related to the mimicking ability of the Sharingan, it is not because you can see/predict an incoming attack that you’ll be able to avoid it (this is especially true with Taijutsu). A Gate Master can easily kill a Sharingan user in a Taijutsu battle for this very reason. It is possible for the Sharingan to follow the Gate’s speed to a certain extent, but their body won’t respond in time to avoid the incoming attack. Here’s a common mistake.
Example:
Ninja 1 opens the 5th Gate and rush at his opponent, dashing from left to right, ultimately using his great speed to move behind Ninja 2 and strike a powerful blow at his neck.
Ninja 2 sees all the movements Ninja 1 does and predict where he’ll be attacking, all based on his movement pattern. He then quickly turn around and block the blow with his own fist.
There were two mistakes in that last example. First, assuming he could turn around in time. This is clearly impossible even for someone who can see and predict his movements. Second, he blocked using his own fist, which would also prove to be impossible considering the great difference in raw strength.
• I hope this thread was useful to some of you, and that it will help everyone make better use of the Sharingan.

~On a side note, here's my opinion on how the Sharingan and Mokuton jutsu interact:

This is a very interesting (and debatable) question. First of all, I'd like to make a distinction between Mokuton jutsus and any other jutsu that creates a static defense or structure (Earth rising plateau for example).
I think (and this is my opinion) that they cannot be categorized as the same thing for the simple reason that when creating a forest, you're creating a living thing that will be able to survive once you leave the battlefield. Simply put; once you've created it, it doesn't need chakra to go on living. If you cut one of it's branch, it'll grow back. If you destroy part of an earth plateau, it'll stay that way.
This may not change a lot but it's how I perceive it anyway. This fundamental difference between creating a living thing with you chakra or simply molding inorganic matter is the key. Inorganic matter will keep remainders of your chakra (at least for the time of the fight), but I wouldn't be so bold as to say it's the same with trees (of course I'm only talking about Mokuton jutsu that creates living trees and not simply logs of wood that Yondaime or Yamato can grow from their bodies).
However, we must be careful when talking about "remainders of chakra". Some jutsu require a constant interaction with the chakra it was given to stay active while being static (Hidden mist is an example, if the chakra wasn't remaining in the mist, it would disperse). But, can we say that an Earth Rampart will crumble if it's strip of its chakra after it's fully formed? I think not. Same goes for the trees. Therefore I would put those jutsu you cited as well as your Mokuton (where you create living trees) into a gray zone. They do not need your chakra to remain "solid" or "present" on the field, but that doesn't mean they are completely chakra free.
Not everything is black or white and I think this is a perfect example. Hence, my opinion, based on those developed arguments, is that it wouldn't completely blind a Sharingan to the point where he can't find you, but it certainly wouldn't be an easy task. We could even instore a rule were everything under 3 tomoe Sharingan (or MS for that matters) is unable to see through those exceptions (Mokuton, Special Earth and Water technique that remains on the field).

Dude this is a great thread, don't get me wrong but one thing you didn't mention was the ability to cast Genjutsu on an opponent by a Sharingan user :o

Hum...a question occured and we even talked about this izuna, but does the sharingan actually enable the user to see through matter?
From the data i collected it seems to only be able to see through matter if there is chakra beyond the matter, actually seing the chakra and not the matter.

Pe. Sasuke VS Deidara
This question is related to what I've stated in the first post. The Sharingan is not the Byakugan. You cannot see through matter, you can see chakra. So if the chakra is underground, then by default you can see through this specific portion of matter that separate you and the chakra.

Tks! :D I felt like i should bring this up because sometimes theres a confusion behind that... Tks again

I know this is only about Sharingan, but for a while I've been wondering about the relationship between other doujutsu and genjutsu? Shouldn't the Rinnegan and Byakugan be able to see through genjutsu to an extent?

Don't know if i'm allowed to post more here, since this thread is izunas and its purpose wasn't really discussion of the sharingan, but scary yamato and izuna made me think a bit about the basis of the sharingan: the ability to see chakra. But...what is chakra and what has chakra?
I know i'm not very experienced here but i'll give it a shot...
According to naruto.wikia "(...)Chakra (チャクラ, chakura) is essential to even the most basic jutsu; it is a mixture of the physical energy (身体エネルギー, shintai enerugī) present in every cell of the body and the spiritual energy (精神エネルギー, seishin enerugī) gained from exercise and experience. (...)"
In the same article and in every single site i've searched about chakra (in naruto verse) it only refers as the energy resulting from both the physical energy and the spiritual energy that reside within the ninja. As such I risk to infer that chakra (which is actually what the sharingan is able to see) is only present within humans and animals (probably only in sentient animals), not plants.
Also, when we come to the definition of senjutsu chakra, we find the idea that there is "nature" energy in the world, that can be gathered and transformed into senjutsu chakra by merging it within the ninja with his own chakra. (wont post the quote because its too long)
What i'm getting at is that Wood (as in plants) doesn't have chakra. Why? Because chakra needs spiritual energy and the plants don't have spirit(nor minds)...as far as we know at least. Also, any technique that stands on its own on the battlefield after it's released (like some water or earth techs as izuna said) won't have chakra since chakra doesn't naturally exist outside the ninja (and refered animals) body except when used to manifest itself.
Long story short: Wood won't have chakra and as such the sharingan will be as blinded by it as it would by a wall and certain techs that stay on the battlefield after the user releases it's chakra, won't either since they have none.
The question is...how far behind a solid non chakra obstacle can the sharingan see chakra?
(I would also infer that plants would actually have natural energy, the one used to fuel senjutsu chakra but that would probably be streching it too much...)
Sorry for the long post and if this wasn't my place to post i'll accept the punishment...

Thank you for taking time in trying to find the answer to this riddle, but I'm affraid you may have misunderstood Yamato's question.
We already know that Plants and rocks/water don't possess chakra, but the question was; Does it when it's created by a jutsu?
Does a plant created from a Mokuton-no-jutsu possess any form of chakra that could blind a Sharingan from spotting his enemies?

I've read through all of this, and I would actually say that chakra does remain in the trees for a small amount.
If you see when Naruto reaches the Nine-Tails mode for the first time, Yamato's Mokuton reacts to it. This could of course be because the nine-tails chakra is "Life Giving" but would the fact that a tree is a living creature be enough to correspond?
I think it's the same principle as in the 4th Naruto movie, where the two Rasengans (Naruto's and Minato's) resonate, and react to eachother. It might be possible that there is a distinct link and that the Mokuton jutsu used by Yamato at that time also resonates with the Yang chakra. It would need chakra to be able to resonate with other chakra, so if this is the case, it actually would have chakra, and hence the sharingan wouldn't be able to see through the forest... But this is all just a theory, + I don't know for sure if movies can be used a an actual base to ground this theory on...
