well yeah i was just wondering if you could explain it in detail. i made the black shape just fine. now i need to get the image to take the shape of the black image with the two rounded corners. i'm lost as to how to make it the same shape

Open a new blank, create the avatar shape then use the magic wand tool to make a selection, just use that selection, carry it over to the pre-made avatar then cut it to the shape of the pre-made avatar.
