Lightning has long light pink hair, blue eyes and a pale skin. She wears an uniform based around a sleeveless white overcoat over a brown turtleneck-like shirt and green metallic pauldron with yellow stripes symbolizing her rank as a Kage. Notably, she also wears a red cape attached to her back on the left side, a long black sleeve over her left arm, knee-high leather boots, and a brown mini-skirt over high-topped black shorts. Her blade is carried behind her in a black case which hangs off her belt, along with a red pack strapped to her left leg. In addition, she also has a necklace with a lightning bolt pendant, two black bands around her right bicep, and a silver navel piercing.
Lightning is determined, concentrated and independent. She is cold and stand-offish to others, which stems primarily from her irritation over her refusal to believe her sister Serah is captured by the enemy, and becoming the enemy herself to save Serah. Much of her motivation is fuelled from what she perceives as failing to properly protect Serah and wanting to make things right, which leads her to lash out at those she believes are responsible for that. Over time, however, Lightning does begin to show compassion and see the errors in her approach.

Background Info. History:
Lightning's father died when she was young, and her mother died from an unknown sickness when she was fifteen. With no other family to turn to, Lightning was given the job of raising her younger sister, Serah. In an attempt to get over the pain her parents' deaths caused and become an adult as quickly as possible, she decided to change her name from Claire Farron to simply "Lightning". After graduating from the ninja academy, Lightning decided to join Iwa’s army, where she attained the rank of Sannin, and was already training to become stronger before the next war. However, she slowly began to lose sight of her goals, and worked many hours as senpai while spending little time with Serah.
Even after they rescued her from an very powerful enemy, Lightning has always held a disdain for the other Iwagakure ninjas. Snow, one of the other soldiers and Serah's boyfriend, is a particular point of annoyance for her, and after a forced encounter with him, Lightning vows to have nothing to do them as well as dissuade her sister's affections for the exuberant man.
As Lightning's twenty-first birthday approaches, she begins to feel guilty for her lack of attention to Serah, feeling that she likely only got involved with Snow in order to quell her feeling of loneliness. Browsing the little shops in the center of Iwa, she overhears a conversation between two tourists, Nora and her son Hope, inspiring her to plan a vacation away from Iwa for her birthday with Serah. She notices Vanille, but believes she must be new to Iwa before she leaves the shop. A few days later, the ninjas are trying to hunt down Vanille. Though they do not explain the intention behind their investigation, the Captain asks Lightning to brief him on areas in Iwa that teenagers are likely to visit in hopes of finding her.
The next day on Lightning's birthday, Serah reveals her fate as a rogue ninja to escape the ninjas that try to find her because she and Kasha stole all Toku’s vodka, as well as her engagement to Snow. Lightning refuses to believe either claim, driving Serah away and demanding Snow to leave as well, leaving her alone to open Serah's birthday present by herself: a survival knife. It is only when someone announces a rogue ninja is captured inside Iwa that she is forced to believe them, though by then it is too late: after learning that captured rogue ninjas will never return out of the deepest pits of Iwa, Lightning immediately tries to find Serah, but Snow reveals she is imprisoned by a secret force of Iwa ninjas.
As lightning tries to get to the prison where Serah is being kept she meets Sazh, whom for unknown reasons also tried to break into the prison. As allies of circumstance, they are forced to work together as Lightning tries to rescue her sister before she is kicked into a pit.
As they reach the prison, Lightning disturbs a guarded group of prisoners with Sazh's aid. While the surviving prisoners escape and are found by Snow and his friends, Lightning and Sazh fight their way through prison guards to reach the area where the pits are. Lightning keeps her motives to herself, despite Sazh's probing, determined to reach the pits and find Serah.
Within the prison, Lightning reveals Serah's fate to Sazh, just before they find her unconscious inside a prison cell. Unknown to Lightning, Snow also infiltrated the prison to find Serah, and the two arrive in time just as Serah awakens. She asks Snow and Lightning to find the key and help her escape, and directly after that looses consciousness again. Snow attempts to approach and beg the prison guards to release Serah, but Lightning takes a more aggressive approach, attacking a group of guards that spotted them, alongside Snow and Sazh. While fighting one of the ninja guards calls for more ninjas and Lightning realizes they have to escape before the ninjas get to know their identity so they will not become enemies of Iwa.
When they defeated the guards and ran their way through the maze-like prison, they realized that they couldn’t find the key without a plan. At first they figured destroying the prison wall would be the only option, despite Snow's optimism that Serah had spotted the key on her way in and thus it was somewhere obvious, Lightning is less than enthused about the task of finding the key as quickly as possible. Running from ninja guards, they come across Serah's cell again and see her lying unconscious on the ground. Snow promises to stay behind and try to break the door of Serah’s cell down, whilst Lightning is convinced she is saying goodbye for good and grows irritated enough with Snow's failure to protect Serah that their encounter comes to blows. She splits with Snow and leads the group onwards out of the place where many guards are, finding an escape route, but were soon spotted. In an act of desperation, Lightning instructs Sazh run back into the prison where the ninja guards are searching for them.
Lightning's impatience towards the group causes them to separate; although Hope initially follows her, she eventually just leaves him behind as well. When the group reconvenes by chance, Lightning resolves to head to Toku-Kage’s home to destroy it, as she refuses to die as one of his tools. Once again Hope is the only one to follow her, as Vanille and Sazh aimlessly wander in the opposite direction. At first, Lightning is unwilling to have the young man tag along with her, worried he would only slow her down. In her frustration and anger at having to look after him while trying to keep herself alive, she inadvertently summons Raidji the skunk king, who attacks Hope. The two defeat Raidji together, which seems to finally persuade Lightning to have faith in the boy and help him "toughen up."
Lightning and Hope make their way back into the prison to the “control room” where she lets him take the lead at his request while she acts as his backup. Later, she gives him the knife, Serah gave to her as a birthday present, for his protection. Hope eventually reveals to Lightning the grudge he holds against Snow for his mother's death. Taking the lead once again, she helps him to devise his own goal “Operation Nora” to help him control his emotions and focus, but immediately regrets it after he calls it his plan for revenge. After they escape the maze-like prison corridor and see “control room” in the distance, Lightning suggests that she and Hope visit his house later, in order to change his mind about revenge and also because he needs to tell his father about what happened to his mother.
The corridor before the control room is littered with guarding ninja, so Lightning and Hope are forced to find another way towards the control room to avoid capture. When they reach the other side of the control room and Lightning uses her Sharingan and sees the head ninja through the wall, then suddenly she has a revelation: she has always been a tool of Iwa, even before becoming a ninja; and in having that comfort taken from her, she wrongly turned to blindly fighting to avoid facing reality. Realizing she had dragged Hope into the same delusion, Lightning tells Hope to abandon Operation Nora, and as she relives her guilt for not believing Serah when told she became rogue ninja, Lightning reassures Hope that she will not abandon him. Later after Lightning reveals to Hope why she changed her name for Serah's sake, she blames herself for him being confused and willing to give up now that they no longer have a plan in mind. The two walk into the control room, where they are immediately surrounded by ninjas led by two commanders, who intend to execute them publicly. Lightning attempts to convince Hope to save himself while she distracts the ninjas, but at the last moment, Snow and Fang, one of his friends, intervene with shurikens and smoke bombs. Lightning forces Hope to run with Snow, while she escapes with Fang. They decide on Hope's home in the middle of Iwa as their rendezvous point using Fang's tracking dogs, but before Lightning can warn Snow about Hope's grudge against him, the latter reveals his intention to complete Operation Nora, and they are cut off before Lightning can attempt to reason with him. On their journey, Lightning learns Fang is not only a member of the Iwagakure army as well, but originally from Konohagure: she and Vanille were rogue ninjas far back, but saved from the prison in Iwagakure without knowing why. Although Lightning is angry at Fang and backhands her when she learns of the woman's involvement in Serah's plan, she then says the act of aggression didn't change anything, taking into account Fang's assurance that Serah will be saved if they realize she hasn’t done anything that serious.
The two women reunite with Snow and Hope in the centre of Iwa, where Snow is badly injured from a fall while protecting Hope. Lightning gets her knife back from Hope, then embraces him, promising to protect him before he promises to do the same for her in return. At Hope's house, Lightning looks after Snow and tends to his injuries. When he finally awakens, she explains the pain she felt for not trusting Serah and then apologizes to him for her behaviour towards him and his relationship with Serah, which he gladly accepts. However, their conciliation is interrupted by the need to figure out what to do next. Hope's father shoots several holes in their main plan, but while they continue to discuss the issue, the house is attacked by Iwagakure ninjas that followed them from the prison, once again led by two commanders. He tells the ninjas that although he personally doesn't agree with hunting them and everything else rogue ninja-related down, it is what the people want. However, chaos suddenly ensues, and the ninjas are rescued by Hope’s father as he distracts the commanders by explaining the situation to them briefly, which gives Lightning and the rest a chance to escape through the caves.
While escaping, they learn Sazh and Vanille are being held captive in the prison as well and Lightning recognizes the prison guarding ninjas are trying to draw them out of hiding. Regardless, going after the two happens to line up with another mission: confronting the guards and the commanders. After meeting up with Sazh and Vanille, they confront the first commander, who abruptly reveals himself to be Jinbei. He tells them something both baffling and crushing to their cause: the key is not what they must look for, but they have to destroy the prison cell completely in order to save Serah. Shocked, the party is forced to flee by taking another route while their clones get killed by the guarding ninja, which brings them to safety. The road they take leads to the other side of the guarded area.
Within the guarded area, they have to be on their guard so Lightning uses her Sharingan. Snow apologizes to Lightning for being wrong about Serah's exact plan, but she insists they have to honour Serah's wishes and find the key, even if it isn't how Jinbei told them to save her. After some time, the run into the second commander, Nagato.., who further explains that the key was protected by a special guardian, and that it only could be found by the one who deserves it the most. However, the last person that tried to save someone out of the prison with the key got defeated by the special guardian. Fang says she will find the key and she will not let Vanille, Sazh and Serah being kept in prison forever. Regardless, the others protect Fang despite her rebellion, and Lightning asks her to fight with them, which she eventually agrees to.
The group finds a way into the prison again and will search for the key there. While searching, Lightning and Snow drift away from the rest of the party and talk about Serah. For the first time, Lightning asks Snow about their planned wedding, and promises him they will see Serah again soon before shedding silent tears. Snow promises Lightning they will see her together, after they find the key. After a while, the party is surprised to see Serah standing right before them, telling them about the key. Lightning is suspicious, and bids Serah to stop, but the girl tauntingly reveals Lightning's real name: Claire. Snow steps in between them and it is revealed Serah is truly a guarding ninja in disguise, trying to manipulate the party into falling into his trap and imprisoning them. After they defeat them they return to the control room.
They open the door and jump into the room full of guarding ninja, but this time without their commanders as they found out about the situation and decided to let the group save Serah. While fighting the guarding ninjas, Lightning found out that the key belonged to the toughest ninja around, Sin. She and snow defeated Sin after a long struggle and got the key, while the others defeated the other ninjas. By that time Jinbei and Nagato.. walk in with Sazh, who they helped to escape.
They all go together to the cell where Serah is in. Lightning opens the cell and sees that Serah is awake again. Everyone is happy that they helped Serah escape and proud their plan worked. Lightning apologizes to her sister for not believing her, and Serah apologizes to Lightning for not telling her right away.
Immediately after they all apologized, Lightning decides to find a way to save Vanille and Fang from the prison as well. They all search for the cell where Vanille and Fang are in and eventually find it. They open it with the key and help them to escape. The one Serah tried to save was Fang, and she succeeded but got captured on her way out. Fang promised her to save her as well and not to tell anyone about her being the one that was being saved. Jinbei and Nagato.. told Toku what happened and explained the situation, but said they didn’t knew who were responsible to save the group from having to move to another land.
The wedding of Serah and Snow was a great party. Everybody of Iwa was there. All having fun, drinking and dancing. Lightning watched all of them and they all celebrated their victory and hopefully a future with good fortune.
The day after the wedding, Lightning decides to find a way to save Vanille and Fang from the prison. She believes Fang will be able to save Vanille somewhere on the way to the prison, and perhaps save other friends of her that also became prisoners in the process. Lightning worries about the fact they are no longer unknown by the prison guards, and believes it will be a long and difficult journey. She decides to take up the task on her own, after coming to the conclusion that Snow, Hope and Sazh would all be tied down with other responsibilities and would not be able to accompany her.
Feeling the need to depart quickly, Lightning quietly leaves the others behind, and suddenly feels a strange force driving her forwards. She quickly starts her training again with as much senseis as she can find; Jinbei, Gobi Gobletsson, ~Crow~, Scarface, Akiza, and The Pervy Sage, until she feels stronger and ready to save them.
Five years after the events of Part one, Lightning is presumed dead to most, though only Serah refused to accept that truth. But in reality, Lightning ended up being out of Iwa for a long time to complete a difficult mission.
To be continued…
