Base of the Living Dead
"We may or may not be the only ones left, so we're leaving this recording to anybody who finds it. This recording will be our story." The shallow and rasp voice was interrupted by screams in the background.
The sounds of a scuffle and a wet smack ensue. Perhaps the sound that followed was a sack of potatoes hitting the ground, but it was most likely a body.
"I apologize. As I was saying, this is our story of survival. It all began one night at the NBCon, the NarutoBase Convention."
A week earlier.
The dance floor was crowded as NarutoBase denizens swung and swayed to the heavy beats of music, fluctuating with the rhythm and tempo. Fog machines pooled a dense ghastly white mist around their feet, thickening in some areas, and swirling in gentle breezes elsewhere. The lights flickered and changed color illuminating the entire scene.
In a room to the west of the dance floor was the food. More food than one could imagine. Shrimp cocktails, roasted Ham, baked turkey, chips and vegetables with more dips than one could name. Then there were the drinks. Everything from near beer to Everclear.
"It was the perfect party. Nothing should have gone wrong, nothing. But everything went wrong."
"Hey, are you okay?" Lawliet nudged a patron of the party, who seemed to be feverish at this time.
The last thing they needed was a party goer getting food poisoning and suing.
Just in time, a female nurse ran over. "Is everything okay?"
"This man seems ill, can you take a look at him, Miss?" Lawliet stepped aside to let the nurse check on him.
"Miss Faust." Miss Faust was a younger nurse, probably premed. She was adorned in a standard nurse's outfit. A long pale pink skirt stopping just above her ankles revealing possibly the most uncomfortable shoes ever. Her pale pink blouse matched in shade and color.
She swept her fair blond hair out of her eyes as she took his heart rate. "Hm, this is strange. He's displaying fever like symptoms, but he has a reduced heart rate."
"That man, he must have been one of the first people infected."
"His temperature is rapidly dropping now!" The nurse panicked at his rapidly deteriorating condition. "He's going comatose! We need to get him to a hospital immediately."
She was trembling, she never expected this to happen at a simple party. Maybe somebody falling and bumping their head or twisting an ankle, but not this.
About a minute after going comatose though, the victims eyes burst open and he let out a startling moan. His eyes were bloodshot at this point, and his body seemed stiff as though afflicted with rigor mortis.
"They all moved slow at first, until their muscles loosened up anyway."
The man slowly lunged at Miss Faust. He probably would have caught her too if another party goer hadn't shoved her out of the way.
"What the hell Zombie? She's a nurse! She's trying to help that man!" Lawliet snapped at Zombie.
"Sorry, but there's definitely something wrong with that man. I can see it in his eyes, he wanted to bite her." Perhaps Zombie was the first to catch on to what was happening.
Zombie was an old war veteran, who despite his age still enjoyed reading manga and watching anime. He was your average stereotypical high school drop out. In his teen years, he was too lazy to take things seriously, and was left without many options, so he had enlisted in the army.
Even after having been out of the Army for a while, he was still in decent physical fitness, though he did have a wee bit of beer sticking around his stomach. Yet he was more than physically fit enough to restrain the man to the ground as several other people joined in to help.
Apparently, Zombie should have requested no assistance. One man trying to hold his head still was bitten on the hand.
"Are you okay, sir?" Miss Faust chimed in, she pulled out bandages and patched the man up.
"If only we had known at that time. If only we had known!"
The man looked at his hand, it seemed like it wasn't bleeding long. "Well, enough of this, I'm going back to the party."
"Wait!" Miss Faust exclaimed. "We need to monitor you, the man who bit you was sick."
Her pleas fell on deaf ears, the man had disappeared into the dance floor.
By the time he was gone, Zombie and the other men had managed to gag the man and bind his hands. “What should we do with him, until the ambulance gets here?”
The nurse was all too finicky at this time to cooperate. So the group had decided it would be best to leave the man bound and restrained. Yet, this wasn't the last of their problems. Almost minutes later screams erupted from the dance floor.
“No, I can't believe he bit you!” a female voice comforted another bite victim.
“I wish we had known the infection would spread so fast. I wish we had known what it was.”
More screams erupted, and chaos ensued. More people must have been bitten.
“I think, at this point, it would be in our best interest to get out of here. Zombie motioned for the others to follow him. Only Lawliet and Miss Faust followed him. “We should get someplace more secure, if this sickness is spreading this rapidly.”
“So is this some kind of new disease?” Lawliet asked the nurse.
The Nurse remained unresponsive. All of her training, and nothing had prepared her for this. Zombie responded for her, “It's best not to speculate at this time. We need to get as many people away from here as possible.”
“Zombie!” Nocturnal and Mockingbird showed up out of the crowd, “Just what is going on here?”
“Well, we're in the process of trying to contact the Admin.” he had to shout over the chaos of the people and the music. “We were going to try to get as many people as possible away from here, but it doesn't seem very likely that it will go as orderly as I had hoped.”
“So, we're just going to abandon those people then?” Mockingbird sounded shameful. He wanted to help them, it was in his blood, but at the same time he wanted to survive. His fight or flight instincts had selected flight this time.
“He would get his chance though.”
As they came to the metal sliding doors where the Admin were judging the contestants, they found Flaw beating on the door and screaming into a speaker. “Let us in! Shit is going out of control down here!”
“Are they even still in there? Do they even know what's going on out here? They're not supposed to be able to have any contact until they're done judging the Signature of the Week.” Nocturnal had high hopes of his entry. He wanted more awards for his showcase.
“Well, I don't think we're getting in there. Let's head upstairs and barricade ourselves in.” Mockingbird came out of the blue, back in control of himself and rational again.
“Barricading ourselves somewhere is a good idea, but not up. We need routes for escape.” Zombie agreed but offered a different approach at the same time.
“Wait, upstairs is good, there is a fire escape leading to the ground floor on the windows.” Nocturnal chimed in.
“Good, then we're going upstairs. I don't feel like getting bitten.” Flaw confirmed the decision.
Zombie kicked in the door, it was locked to prevent people from wandering around the facility. Apparently it used to be some kind of research facility. It didn't matter, they made pain killers, not murderous viruses right?
The group of six were beginning up the stairs when they heard a wail. “Wait for me!” Crawling on her hands and knees through the chaos came Zerabitu. She would definitely be a good addition to the group. She was probably tougher than Nocturnal or Mockingbird anyway.
Though she didn't present much patience as she ran right past them and up the stairs. They were beginning to follow when she came back down. “That way is no good. It has a heavy metal door that is locked up tight.”
“Well then, we'll just have to get out of here all together.” Zombie's eyes narrowed as he studied their surroundings.
It had only just hit them, the stench of blood in the air. The infection was spreading far too fast. People weren't stopping at just attacking one another anymore. Now that they could actually stop and focus on the crowd, they realized they were eating each other's flesh.
Miss Faust suddenly convulsed and vomited on the floor. This attracted the attention of several infected people near them.
“Well, this doesn't look good.” Zombie shook his head, as he kicked a table leg snapping the leg off. “I was hoping we could avoid fighting our way out of this.”
“Uhm, Zombie, Mister. Just wondering, why do you have that evil looking grin on your ...” Lawliet was cut off by Zombie's vicious battle cry as he charged the group.
Zombie swung into the nearest person heaving the heavy oak table leg into his stomach forcing him backwards into the others. “Quickly, run!”
The group managed to get by, as Zombie stood behind them fending their backs. “How far are we from the front doors?”
Zombie couldn't hear the response as a wet crack sounded when he struck one of the men in the head. He should have collapsed, but it seemed like it didn't even phase him.
At this point, Zombie decided to run instead. As he turned around to run, he was the group had already pushed forward. Flaw had acquired a red cylindrical fire extinguisher which he was using to shove men aside.
As Zombie ran behind them, he too would use the table leg to push the infected men back.
“There's no way we're going to get through this crowd, is there another way?” Nocturnal noticed they were slowing down as the crowd thickened.
“Yes, we can use the hallway, it wraps all the way around the dance floor.” Lawliet responded, she seemed to be keeping her cool, but she was extremely panicked.
They began their fleeing again. As they reached the door to the hallway, they found it locked too. “Why are all these doors locked?” Lawliet shrieked in frustration and fear.
“Don't worry, I have an ax!” Zombie yelled as he swung the ax down on the handle causing it to fall apart and allowing the door to sing in.
Great, the hallway had no lights. As they all got through the door, almost instinctively, Nocturnal and Mockingbird moved in unison, propping heavy shelves against the door behind them. They didn't know what those people were, but they figured that should stop them.
As they moved silently through the hallways, an eerie moan reverberated and echoed throughout the building. As if the mad men weren't enough, the moans just made them paranoid an anxious and continued building on their already extremely elevated stress levels.
Then the banging began. It started as one person, then two, then three and they just kept growing in numbers. “We don't have long until they get through that door.” Miss Faust cried in fear.
“Relax, it will hold them long enough, at least until we get out of here. “Nocturnal reassured her.
Flaw sighed, almost going into an enigmatic face palm. “Can't we just ditch her?”
“Well, seeing as she is our only trained medical professional, no we cannot.” Nocturnal almost yelled at Flaw.
“We wont be ditching anybody, unless they become infected. Until then, we protect each other.” As Zombie was speaking, the barricades holding the door shut collapsed, and the moans suddenly became much more vibrant and echoed loudly down the halls.
Nothing needed to be said, they continued down the hall and came ever closer to the front door. They could see light, but they could tell it was from a street light. Unfortunately they weren't moving fast enough. The men were catch up to them.
“I'll hold them off.” Zombie said, a sadistic grin on his face as he turned around to once again take arms against his fellow man.
“Not alone you wont.” It was Flaw, brandishing his heft fire extinguisher. “The rest of you get the door open, by any means!”
Just as Flaw finished talking the first of the madmen were upon them. This one looked terribly familiar, and wore a shirt with possibly the most annoying phrase ever “Dattebayo.” Just seeing that phrase on his shirt made Zombie want to punch him in the face.
Instead he cut his arm off with one fell swoop of the fire ax. The arm dropped to the ground and continued to writhe, all the while the man kept coming at them.
“What in the hell!” Flaw yelled as he thrust the bottom of the fire extinguisher into his face, crushing his face in.
The man instantly collapsed. This time though, he stopped moving. “Damn, I just killed a man!”
“Feels good, doesn't it.” Zombie laughed, as another of the infected approached.
Zombie swung his ax down, the wood splitting spike slamming into the top of his head and easily pierced into his brain. Fragments of skull burst outwards as gore splattered on the walls around them.
Zombie continued grinning all the while. “Don't think too much of it, these guys practically aren't even human anymore!”
Flaw shook his head and continued his battery. While Zombie was going wild and having the time of his life, Flaw seemed to remain calm and use minimal energy and continued to use the same face crushing tactic over and over.
As the corpses piled up, they heard Zerabitu yelling at them “We got the door open, we need to go.”
Flaw instantly turned and began to leave. Zombie felled one more, and then followed. As they emerged into the open air, Zombie had regained his composure.
“Whose car is the closest?” Zombie questioned the group. Nocturnal raised his hand pointing to his rust red Chevy Astro. Coincidentally with 'Free Candy' spray painted on the side. Zombie just shook his head as they ran over to it. At least the large van would fit all seven of them inside.
Well, they needed to get away fast, anyway. As they were climbing in, hordes of those men began to emerge from the building.
“So where are we going?” Nocturnal asked, from behind the wheel.
Zombie shook his head, “Obviously to the hotel. We already have rooms. I'm sure all this will be straightened up in the morning.” It was obvious Zombie didn't believe his own words. The others wanted to believe his words and agreed with him.
The decision had become unanimous, they would head to the hotel. As the Van left the parking lot, several squad cars pulled in with ambulance in pursuit. Maybe it really would be cleared up by the morning?
“Those are the feelings that would get us into a deeper mess than where we started. We had done good by getting out of that building. Unfortunately true chaos was right around the corner.”
